Ms. McKinlay made me feel the frigid winter along the Connecticut coast, and the outlying islands. The mystery of “Who Killed Peter Rosen?” one of two brothers who lived in an estate on Star Island, and were recluses and hoarders piqued my interest. I was also delighted to see Milton Duffy, the town historian, and the only man to get through the veneer of stuffy librarian, Ms. Cole, play an integral part in the story. The story got a little convoluted, however, which is why I didn’t give it 5 stars. But the main characters were a joy. Definite read for anyone who enjoys the series, or a good cozy.

A Likely Story series Library Lover’s Mysteries

I must say that libraries in my area are nothing like this. Lindsey Norris is the local librarian. She has started lending books to the islanders that find it hard to get to the actual building. One island is home to a pair of brothers. They are very reclusive and have booby trapped their home so no one will bother them. Almost their entire lives have been spent by themselves on the island. Peter has a broken back and is confined to a wheelchair. The other brother Stewart comes to the main land at night and collects odds and ends that are set out for the garbage. When Stewart does not meet Lindsey at his dock, she and Sully become concerned. Once they get to the house, (after a booby trap or two is set off) they find one brother with a bullet to the chest. The other is missing. Did he murder his brother? Was he taken? Is he running scared? The story is trying to find him and find out what really happened. During all of this, Robbie has been on a trip to New York.
Lindsey doesn’t know why. Sully is her driver and helper in this story. Robbie comes back in the end with a BIG surprise. In order to solve the case, a lot of the brothers family history is brought to life. In more way than one. There is also a short story at the end. The short story is trying to find a run away Healthcliff and what he is up to. He has located a helper in his quest. Will have to read the next book to see it the new character is staying.

Audiobook A Likely Story by Jenn McKinlay

This is a great story and very well told. There are plenty of characters to identify and get to know Just a PG13 sprinkle of romance. I like that the main character is not constantly in conflict with law enforcement and concerned male characters. It’s nice to see the camaraderie and usual respect.

Audio A Likely Story narrated by Allyson Ryan

Librarian Lindsey Norris loves her job at Briar Creek Public Library and cares about everyone who comes in there. Part of her job involves delivering books to people who can’t make it to the library, including eccentric brothers Stewart and Peter Rosen. Much to her dismay, on one of her trips she find Peter Rosen dead – shot in the chest – and Stewart Rosen is nowhere to be found. Stewart seems the most likely suspect, but Lindsey isn’t convinced and she, along with her friends, tries to clear his name.

“A Likely Story” is the nicely done sixth book in Jenn McKinlay’s Library Lovers cozy mystery series. I love the library setting and the cast of characters in this series, including Lindsey, Sully, Beth (I love Beth’s storyline in this book), Charlene, Mary, Violet, Milton, Robbie, even Ms. Cole. The mystery is well plotted (McKinlay does an excellent job of describing the Rosen’s booby-trapped house) with just the right amount of suspense and more than a few twists , so even though I thought I had the killer figured out I was completely surprised at events that happened towards the end of the book. The one thing I don’t like about this book (and series) is the ongoing Lindsey/Sully/Robbie love triangle. While there are some nice humorous bits between the two men, I find the love triangle to be distracting – often taking me away from the mystery. I wish Lindsey would pick one or the other and get this ongoing storyline over with.

Besides the main novel, “A Likely Story” contains a reader’s guide to Josephine Tey’s “The Daughter of Time”, a craft project, recipes, and a cute short story.

McKinlay’s always a great read but the plot this time was particularly and satisfyingly twisty. And I loved the bonus short story. And Beth’s comic subplot. New fans and old will love this installment.
