This is the third book in the David Wolf series, although you don’t have to have read the others to enjoy this one. This is the first one I’ve read and I had no trouble following the plot.

Wolf is the sheriff in a small Colorado town. A camping trip with his twelve-year-old son is supposed to give him a rare opportunity to relax, but when they encounter a small group of armed men, Wolf is shot and he throws himself into the investigation to protect his son.

This is a fast-moving story. Wolf is a classic example of the “former military guy turned law enforcement” guy who does everything really well . . . he fights well, he’s a great investigator, he’s charming to the ladies, etc. The author usually keeps it relatively plausible, I’ve certainly read more outlandish examples of this type of guy. I appreciated that the author was able to create suspense without artificially hiding information from the readers to be revealed at the last minute. Overall, it’s a fun bit of escapist suspense, but probably one that won’t make a huge impression.

One minus is that this book could really use a decent editor. There are frequent errors of the type that spellcheck would typically miss, but can jolt a reader right out of the story.

Alive and Killing audiobook in series David Wolf

I have come to like the David Wolfe character and am about ready to order book 4. The author makes Wolfe a realistic character who is honest and dedicated to be the best law enforcement possible. He is not intimidated by difficult people but he also does not possess super powers, which is fine with me. Wolfe finally found a love interest beyond his wife and that person is a believable FBIs agent with personal baggage of her own. I also like the way the bad guys are portrayed as well as some of the sleazy characters who always seem to show up in his 3 books. Wolfe seems to know who has a questionable agenda and will not be coerced into going to the dark side of human nature. The books are just the right price and length to make reading easy and enjoyable. I never got bogged down and fe!t the plot was moving at the right speed. Having the stories all, or mostly, take place in rural Colorado is a plus for me since I know little about the Mountain West and it’s unique culture. I gave it a 5 just like book 2 The Silversmith.

Audiobook Alive and Killing by Jeff Carson

What a pleasure to read a good story, well written, well edited except for a few small mistakes, which is sometimes the fault of auto spell check. Anyway, it held my interest all the way through. The characters are believable, well developed, and the action is exciting. Carson has that writer’s gift that makes you feel like you are there so it plays in your mind like a well done film. And he does it without being ridiculously flowery or verbose. He just seems to have a knack for painting scenes with words. Thanks for the literary romp, Jeff. Ok, I just bought the next 2 in the David Wolf series, and can’t wait!

Audio Alive and Killing narrated by Sean Patrick Hopkins

The third book in this series focused on Wolf and his son, Jack. It is an extraordinary story about the lengths this father will go to in order to protect his child.

This fast-paced suspense story captures you from the beginning and holds you hostage until the last page is read. The descriptions of Rocky Point, Colorado and the surrounding area are so well-written that I can visualise the forests, mountains and locations where the action all takes place. The characters are well-developed, likeable and I am getting to know them, pretty soon they will be like old friends. There are so many twists and turns that sometimes, you might not know which way is up. Just when you think you have the whole thing figured out, another clue was cleverly revealed. I am very much enjoying Mr. Carson’s writing style it is unlike any author I have read in this genre in a l-o-n-g time!

Te author sure knows what he’s doing and sometimes glosses over things but in general he draws you into the story with the easy going manner of the Sheriff who’s his lead character. The first book was disjointed with the hop from mountains of Colorado and a story in the making to Italy and a totally different feel. But the hero stayed the hero nonetheless and he picked up speed as a Dad and a determined man in this book. I am planning on reading the whole series so I can enjoy the talent of this writer and the world he is creating. I am learning a lot from this series. Would love to see it on TV sometime!
