Detective Inspector Nick Dixon of the Avon and Somerset Police has a bad habit. His intuition, his guesses, his sense of how investigations are going and should go inevitably turn out to be right.

This isn’t a characteristic that endears you to colleagues and superiors, who may be more concerned about police politics and career advancement.

Now Dixon is tracking, or trying to track, a serial killer, who’s left a few bodies in his wake and is intent on taunting the police detective. The investigation leads into a wholly different kind of case, one seemingly bungled by Dixon’s old police foe, and then into a case of bribery and corruption in the construction business. And Dixon keeps sensing and guessing correctly.

“Beyond the Point” by British writer Damien Boyd is the ninth Dick Nixon mystery, and it may well be the best one yet – which is saying a lot, because there hasn’t been a miss in the entire series. Boyd uses his own experience as a legal solicitor and a member of the Crown Prosecution Service to frame his stories, and then infuses considerable research in just the right way. In this story, for example, the reader will learn a lot about big construction projects, like bridges and nuclear power plants, but will never feel like this is a data dump to impress with how much the author knows.

What Boyd has done in these mysteries is no small feat. He’s mixed intriguing premises, a diabetic hero who often has to stifle himself when he’s dealing with superiors, the ongoing romance between Dixon and policewoman Jane Winter, and the fascination of solid police work punctuated by Dixon’s tendency to try the unexpected and the unorthodox. It’s no surprise that the detective often finds himself in trouble at police headquarters.

Beyond the Point audiobook in series DI Nick Dixon Crime

This latest entry in the Nick Dixon is riveting with a couple of heartstopping moments. Nick and his team are still after a serial killer that they were not able to capture in the previous book. Nick, as always, manages to find tbe killer thanks to sheer dogged police work plus an “aha” moment of intuition. He tracks the killer down to the construction site of a huge nuclear energy power plant and confronts him only to have the killer confess that his last victim was a contract job. This means that Nick and his team have another case to solve, a case involving industrial sabotage during the construction of a bridge over the Severn and corrupt practices involving contract grants. Dixon has to work with Supt. Potter and his arch rival Inspector Chard (who finally gets his just reward for being such an unpleasant, hypocritical worm. All ends satisfactorily, especially after a few heartrending moments of worry about Monty.
Like the previous books in the series, police procedures are realistic, the plot is well defined and the story moves at a fast clip. In every novel the plot involves something extra. In one novel, the rescue work of the Coast Guard was highlighted. In another, it was the politics and economics involved in the production of insulin. In this one it is the construction of the energy plant at Hinkley Point and the system of contracting and subcontracting work. The plant is well described. Out of curiosity, I looked it up on Google Earth and it is huge!

Audiobook Beyond the Point by Damien Boyd

I’ve read all of Damien Boyd’s previous Nick Dixon books. The storyline in this novel picks up from his last book. In the interim I’ve read other books and struggled to remember the preceding book’s plot. This newer book has no basic recap of what had gone before. The author seems to have expected the reader to jump into the story remembering well what happened before; therefore it lost a star.

As for the characters, they are very well developed and the writing very well thought out. I like British police procedurals/thrillers since the plots follow a good thought process rather than guns and gunfights. They are different as night and day.

I’ve not found a DI Nick Dixon book which disappoints, neither does this one. It has murder, mystery, a dark side, as well as personal sides. There are enough factions and well thought out twists adding yet another winner to this series.

Audio Beyond the Point narrated by Napoleon Ryan

Beginning with As The Crow Flies I’ve read and enjoyed every book in the series. It is satisfying to have been on this journey as Mr. Boyd has improved his writing skills. I reared a daughter with diabetes so I can agree with most of the information regarding diabetes in these stories, and I realize there are obviously differences between the UK and the USA. However, Nick probably wouldn’t be getting away with his swashbuckling ways without some consequences. I know, it’s a story, and It doesn’t cause me to enjoy the books any less. I trust that Mr. Boyd will continue the adventures of Nick, Jane, and Monty.

This was another amazing read by R Boyd! I don’t know where he gets all these ideas, but it sure would be interesting to visualize what goes on in his brain! Throwing in multiple plots, and twists and turns, he again makes sure you’ll never figure out the guilty party. I truly highly recommend this book, and I do have to say it’s about time DI Dixon!
