Sadly I have just finished Damien Boyd’s latest book which is, marginally, the best of a gripping series of crime rampages through Burnham and surrounding areas. I say marginally because they are all brilliant and this one stands out by the really clever, plausible, and interesting way the plot wound around the canals and anals of local history, local characters and a wizardry of tempting snapshots of an area of outstanding beauty: the Westcountry of England.
Sorry, but the pressure is on: I hope Damien Boyd has his next book on the boil.

Dead Lock audiobook in series DI Nick Dixon Crime

I just binge read all the DI Dixon books back to back. They are entertaining and keep you turning the page. I think for me the biggest draw to begin with was the location for the series. One of my favourite areas of the country and just a nice change for some of the crime thriller books that I read to be UK based. But after the first book, as short as it was, I was invested in the characters and wanted to continue on their journey with them. Now that I have read this last one and it’s only just come out, I’m going to have to wait a while to catch up with Nick, Jane and Monty… what on earth am I going to read now?! 🙂

Audiobook Dead Lock by Damien Boyd

An excellent story as ever, my favourite crime novel series, many of the locations are familiar which for me makes the reading irresistible. The plots all have a contemporary theme to them and the Authors knowledge of law and modern policing shine through without being overwhelming.
The cast of regular characters is quite large, but they all have a part to play supporting Nick Dixon in his regular role as a Somerset based Detective Inspector.
The series is growing rapidly (Thankfully) along with its characters, and although each book stands on its own the sequential nature of the series makes reading them in order the best way to enjoy them all.

Audio Dead Lock narrated by Napoleon Ryan

I have the whole set of Dixon detective novels and always enjoyed them. However, I found myself getting a bit puzzled following the trail from Express Park to the motorway bridge to Brent Knoll and back to Hinkley and back to Express Park and then over to the beach. However does Dixon do it in the time? I am finding it hard to work out the story and when Dixon makes a sudden leap of deduction I can’t think to myself “oh of course” because I haven’t been able to keep up or detect any clues to that effect. I know it’s a whodunnit and the current ethos on writing whodunnits seems to be to keep the outcome obscure at all costs. But I found this hard to follow. The books are always well researched but there is only so much descriptive narrative that can be gained out of driving quite long distances along stretches of motorway. Probably I should have read the previous book again to remind me how the story line had started… saying all that; I have tried to write books and can’t get any further than the second chapter so I am hardly one to criticise.

I throw up my hands and give in. I have read all the Dixon books to date bar the last one in the series and I will be reading that one soon. I have reviewed all those that I have read and have awarded them either three or four stars. I have given what I believe to be constructive criticism. I have commented on the sketchy character of the supporting cast, the superstar ability of Dixon, the inability of his colleagues, the skill of Jane Winter in asking obvious questions, the plot holes etc etc. However, despite all of these I cannot stop reading these books and I cannot put them down. This book was no exception. It is a page turner, an easy reader and provides non challenging entertainment. As a bonus it is around chapter 20 before Jane ‘rolls her eyes’! And what’s more she actually contributes to the story in a major way and that is a first. One of his best I think this one. So there you are Damien, I applaud you. I have finally accepted that despite their faults these novels have that something that grabs you and leaves you wanting more.
