Craig Johnson brings his humor and a good classical education to another Walt Longmire mystery, one which delves more deeply than usual into the past. This time it’s a 65 million year old past, as Walt and his deputies investigate the death of a Cheyenne who owned the land on which a priceless dinosaur fossil is discovered. The story weaves serious and knotty questions of ownership and past injustices with humor and pathos. Johnson has been quoted saying that writers of too-earnest police procedurals don’t know how law officers balance the stress of The Job with deadpan humor and sarcasm. Walt and Vic spar wittily with a feckless government lawyer, solemnly critique the color of a prosthetic eye, and deftly negotiate their own slippery relationship. But in the background, a tragedy is brewing that will shatter a member of Walt’s own family, a tragedy with roots in the previous novel. My only complaint is that this ongoing story threatens to overwhelm the novel itself, as it draws readers out of this story by constant references to another. Still, Dry Bones is a great read, a welcome addition to an entertaining series.

Dry Bones series Walt Longmire

Amazon – Your “which of these words best describes the mood” question should allow more than one selection – I chose “suspenseful” because this is a mystery – but it is so much more – it’s all of the choices you’ve mentioned. Craig Johnson’s characters are wonderful. They’re likeable, people you might know with humor and habits that are familiar – depending on whether or not you’ve paid any attention to the people around you. Humor is a large part of all of Mr. Johnson’s books and I found myself laughing out loud (that’s LOL to the computer-driven). I am so impressed with his writing – the development of the story, the characters, I wish I could write like that.

Audiobook Dry Bones by Craig Johnson

Through meticulous research Craig Johnson has again created a tale that was complex and hard to put down. The discovery of T Rex bones on Indian property and who could claim this huge discovery that was named “Jen” was basis for the plot. Walt Longmire is the lead character as well as Walt’s team of law people. The author has the ability to introduce and describe new characters that both amusing and interesting.

Audio  Dry Bones narrated by George Guidall

What a tale! Craig Johnson has out done himself with this eleventh installment of the Longmire saga. Less wisecracking, but enough to keep you chuckling, less hints at the supernatural with just a whisper here and there, and a solid plot developing at a relentless pace. Once again the author lets you feel the great love he has for his country and its savage landscapes. There is more than a suggestion of a sequel to come, picking up on the book’s secondary thread. I can’t wait.

Craig Johnson is back with a new Longmire story! Dry Bones features ancient fossil bones and all of Johnson’s best characters, Henry Standing Bear, Lucien Connelly, Vic Moretti, and Dog. Once the story begins it keeps an amazing pace! One dinosaur’ s bones leads to a dead man, then people go missing, Lucien ends up in the hospital, and Cady is due to arrive with Lola. If you are a Longmire fan you have probably ordered the book by now! If you just want a good action read, here it is, Dry Bones by Craig Johnson!

Johnson has the gift of the natural story teller. It is clear, authoritative, informational and highly enjoyable. From his beautiful descriptions of the Wyoming countryside, to the tidbits of “useless” information his character Sheriff Walt Longmire pulls from memory… The interplay between characters draws the reading into the story. Dry Bones is another highly enjoyable read on a cold winter’s evening, morning, day… anytime!
