Another good read in this series. The one criminal that the detectives of the 87th Precinct have never been able to catch is back in town. As before he sends clues to the detectives, but this time not about the job he is planning. The Deaf Man is planning a job, a robbery during the Christmas season when cash is plentiful, but he is also planning revenge on the detectives of the 87th Precinct and even with the clues given the detectives they haven’t figured out they are the target. Even though written many years ago these are good police procedural/ mysteries and when the Deaf Man is involved they are even better.

Eight Black Horses audiobook in series 87th Precinct

This is another Deaf Man book. In trying to make him so smart & clever, the author just succeeds in making the detectives look stupid. (Semi-spoilers coming.) Once the pattern emerges & the presents start arriving, they have no clue as to how to proceed. Lets see, eight black horses- maybe you should watch the police horses stabled in your own precinct?? Then come the squad cars. Maybe you should check out your own cars?? Then on the last day theres a power outage & someone arrives to install something. Suspicious, maybe?
A very weak entry in a great series.

Eight Black Horses audiobook by Ed McBain

The plot unfolds very skilfully, with many crisscrossed lines in it. Two characters are confronted each other, the devoted policeman and the merciless criminal with his whimsical and refined plans of destruction. One of the best of McBain, among a lot of others. Highly recommend to everyone who might estimate and eventually enjoy author’s “87th Precinct” series.

Eight Black Horses audio narrated by Ron McLarty

The book is a classic of course but I have to say the Kindle version that I received was missing numerous pages — namely the ones that showed the pictures that the Deaf Man sends in taunting the police. Unfortunatly I waited too long and couldn’t get my money back. One expects such things from self-published authors, but come on!

Another great story with the 87th Precinct. Excellent background development of the characters. Tense suspense at the end. Loved it!
