Full Disclosure

Simone is directing her high school\’s production of RENT and I may be biased but RENT is my favorite musical and that just added to my experience reading this book! Simone switches schools when she is outed to the school by another student about her HIV status. Now, at her new school, she is happy living life with her friends Lydia and Claudia – Lydia is bisexual and Claudia is an ace lesbian – until she finds a letter in her locker telling her that she must stop spending time with the guy she likes, Miles or the anonymous writer will reveal her HIV status. This is a very important read and I learned a lot about HIV from Simone\’s story. Full Disclosure is a very sex-positive book. There are many scenes talking about how having HIV doesn\’t make sex impossible, the MC masturbates and she goes to a sex shop with her friends to buy a vibrator. There\’s also discussion about sex with Claudia, an ace lesbian. Simone is raised by her two queer fathers; Paul and Javier. Throughout the novel, Simone goes through the process of questioning her sexuality (bisexual). But, the romance she has is with a boy from the lacrosse team, Miles. Garrett\’s debut novel talks heavily about being an adopted Black girl who is HIV-positive. Simone struggles a lot and we see how HIV affects her life. If you like musicals, you\’ll love this book since it is filled with references! This is a very important YA novel. We need more books like Full Disclosure.

3.5 stars I really liked the diversity in here. I love the representation in here. I liked the way different subjects were spoke about and handled. I liked how educational it was and how much it spoke about being HIV positive. I do feel Like some topics we’re very elementary. Some subjects we’re mentioned through very naive questions. Considering the main character is a teenager and she speaks clearly about sexual things I feel some questions were only asked and breaches for the benefit of the reader and not to move the plot. It’s not necessarily bad but i felt I had to suspend my disbelief and say yeah sure teenager wouldn’t know about this. I like how the plot was realistic. And I like how one point of tension wasn’t between the main love interest. Books have this habit of not telling the main interest a really important plot point which comes to bite them later. But I’m really happy this book strayed from that. I couldn’t give a full 4 stars because of the elementary ways some subject was brought up and spoken about but I also like the range of subjects the spoke about. I would recommend this book to anyone who want to read a sex positive book.

I absolutely adored this book — the first of its kind in the YA space, and above-and-beyond for a debut from a 19 year old author.

I really enjoyed this book. Simone is a teenager who is HIV positive. Her dads try to be supportive as possible, but can sometimes come off a little overprotective. She is helpimg direct the play at her school called, \”Rent\” when she ends up meeting a nice guy name Miles. Someone is out to see that Simone doesn\’t end up happy with Miles. Can they keep her secret? Will they tell the whole school? Several hard topics in this book but it\’s worth every page. Love, friendships, jealousy, sadness, happiness and so many other feels will make you love Simone every step of the way. I loved the way this story balanced the complexity of an HIV positive protagonist and the challenges and prejudices she faces while also being a sweet story about a musical theatre nerd falling in love. The delicate and misunderstood subject matter of HIV and a teen\’s natural questions about sex and sexuality could have felt too heavy handed in the hands of a lesser author, but this is handled beautifully, with a lot of humor and heart. I smiled so much while reading this story, and would find it perfect for any teen, but especially ones who love theatre.
