Each chapter covers 2-3 hashtags, starting with #YesAllWomen and #MeToo and passing through #GirlsLikeUs, #TrayvonMartin and #BlackLivesMatter, among many more. The authors have a unique method from their three backgrounds – they combine narrative description with content analysis with network analysis to be able to trace how messages travel online, who spreads them, and, most importantly, their impact on the formation of counterpublics – networks of solidarity that are not possible through mainstream, dominant group media. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is 1) Cynical or depressed about Twitter and/or 2) Curious to get an in-depth look at some of the most important justice-oriented hashtags of our time.

An extremely well-written, detailed, vivid, and intricate book that takes you through the evolution of Hashtag Activism, with its origins in Twitter. Especially now, the content is extremely relevant, and the personal essays from the creators of some of the most famous hashtags help readers understand the reasoning and intention behind each activist phenomenon.
