Demons, Angels, Elves and an Imp. This Imp is one of the most memorable characters you will ever read about. It’s also one of the funniest series I ever read.
Although I must admit this was a little darker than the rest of the series so far (Even if the last book made me cry.)
The Imp in question has been banished to Hel. She is pond scum and not able to heal herself or change her form. In enemy hands she must find a way to save the beings she loves ( yes I did say a demon loves……) Free the humans from their elven slave masters, survive the demon she has signed a thousand year mating contract with and get back to the Angel she loves. But first she has to figure out how to not be pond scum

Imp Forsaken audiobook in series Imp Series

I must be honest! The start of the book had me crushed. Sam/Az was nearly destroyed. Her demon powers, her human form and even her normal demon form were gone. She was less then a slug and dumped in an elf territory to boot. The story moved very slowly telling of Az as a captive of the elf lord Feille and his evil torture of her in his dungeon. She finally escaped, but went from the frying pan into the fire. Sam/Az suffered terribly through the this story. Not just physically, but emotionally beyond what any human or demon should have survived. Sam/Az stayed true to the demands she and the elf lord Taullian had agreed to, freeing the humans from slavery, but with her in such a dire strait Taullian reneged! Sam/Az then had to suffer terribly by the hands of lord of the demons, Ahriman. It seemed this book just kept heaping evil and hurt on Sam/Az at every turn and it would end with her death. The last few chapters brought about a quick pace and Sam/Az’s life took a turn for the better. The ending made my heart joyful and I can not wait to read the next book. Debra Dunbar I forgive you

Audiobook Imp Forsaken by Debra Dunbar

We went from my least favorite book in the series straight to what I think is the best book to date. It was wonderful watching Az/Sam pull herself back together and prove that whatever her official ranking, she’s a force to be reckoned with.

There was a second POV in this book and it threw me for a bit. One of Gregory’s brothers gets his own POV chapters to explore unrest among the angels and a few other plot points that have been developing. It took a few rounds with Gabriel to feel comfortable with him, but once we settled in, he proved interesting as well. And it allowed Dunbar more freedom to explore than if Gregory had been the angelic POV.

I debated for quite some time whether I should skip this book entirely based on many of the negative reviews. But I’m glad I didn’t, because this was the best in the series thus far.

Yes, chapters alternate with the point of view of a relatively new angel, Gabriel (Gregory’s younger brother), as he investigates the deaths of the two angels. His only interactions with our favorite angel, Gregory (whom we finally learn his real name), are in mere snippets. But there is a point to this, laid out in the end.

The chapters from Sam’s point of view are outstanding. She spends the first two months locked in an elven dungeon, unable to do much more than simple healing. She is stripped of Gregory’s bond, and can hardly even change her appearance, stuck primarily in human form. But there is also a point to her suffering, and it prefaces amazing things to come in this series.

We don’t see many of the side characters in this book, except for Dar and Leethu. They proof their loyalties and worth to Sam in this installment.

I continued to find grammatical errors in this book, but not as many as in prior books in the series. Regardless, they didn’t detract much from my enjoyment of this book.

WOW. This book follows straight on from the last one so you must read the others first. The story follows Sam as she struggles to regain her strengths after the explosion that all but killed her at the end of the last one. Its a traumatic and difficult journey fraught with violence, politics and war and it is epic.

I think this book, unlike the others, should be classified as fantasy not urban fantasy as most of the book takes place in Hel or Aaru (heaven) and the plot involves mating relations with demons, a war between Elf kingdoms and a major conflict between the angels. This may not appeal to some but it is done really well and the fantasy elementa are both refreshingly original and fascinatingly well thought out. Dunbar’s world and lore are so in depth, it is easy to believe and relish the races, places and interaction between them.

Note to readers, a lot of this book is written from Gabriel, an angel’s perspective and not Sam’s so it is a bit different and I found thr Gabriel sections difficult to read. This was partly because they were full of in depth observations and reflections from the angel devoid of Sam’s usual sense of humour and delicious wickedness. It was also partly because Gabriel was basically going over all the same details of the plot from the previous book which we the reader already know as he investigates the ongoing angel breeding plot. I felt it was unnecessary honestly that he spent half the time just finding out what Gregory could have told him in one scene. But toward the end it got releveant and interesting.

Overall the Gabriel parts were hard to slog through because the Sam parts were just so riveting that I was dying to get back to her story every time and found the Gabriel parts a bit of an annoying interruption. But it was quite interesting and at the end did not detract from the amazing story.

Just one thing to note is that Sam’s character has evolved really far, really fast and I foubd myself missing some of her earlier impish ways. She is now really just one of the good guys, more of a hero than the angels, and the ending solidifies this in a physical way that I’m not sure I liked. Will have to wait for the next one to decide.
