Ironically the more he wants to hide the more the world approaches him with its problems. In this first episode narrated by Dick Hill Jack comes to Margrave with no particular thought in mind. This is the first time he comes to a place with no mission assigned thus he thought all of it would be fun or at least less taxing. When he reaches the place he gets arrested after a short while and is charged with murder. Jack does not know anything about the person who is killed and realizes that he is stuck in a big problem by all means.
In the past, during his service in the military, he has killed many men but not in Margrave. Soon one thing becomes clear to Jack i.e pleading for mercy is not the way out; taking things into his own hands appears to be the best choice for him. The hero of The Sentinel and The Midnight Line solves his first unassigned mission in this first book after which the series gets proper launching. Jack is presented as a brave, daring, and honest man here who means no harm to anyone but if someone is proved guilty he does reach for him in full fury.
