This might be a very good book… if you detest Sherlock Holmes as a character, though in that case I can’t figure out why you would want to read a book about Sherlock Holmes. Every word practically oozes contempt for Sherlock Holmes, so much so that while I tried desperately to keep slogging through this book, I got stuck some twenty pages in and re-read some much more enjoyable books to cleanse my palate. As one other reviewer said, this is a “deeply unhappy book” which I wouldn’t even recommend to my one friend who actually likes stories which present Holmes/Watson in the dimmest and most depressing light.

If you’re looking at this book to find Watson and Holmes in a relationship, then may I recommend you steer clear and go instead for one of the following: “Kissing Sherlock Holmes” by T.D. McKinney,”A Study In Lavender: Queering Sherlock Holmes” by Elka Cloke and “My Dearest Holmes” by Rohase Piercy.

Nice read and play on what might have been, but I was a little disappointed in lack of more details. Mostly told as supposition and not actually from some more of the cases.

Audiobook My Dear Watson by L.A. Fields

Do not expect to read about a loving friendship between Holmes/Watson, no less a loving deeper relationship… not when told through the snide, nasty, jealous voice of Watson’s second wife. I found the book formulaic from chapter to chapter, and the repetition became dull and predictable, i.e. – synopsis of one of Holmes’ cases mixed with brief Holmes/Watson commentary as told through the bitter eyes of a thoroughly unlikeable woman. If you dislike Holmes – if you are a fangirl disappointed that you can’t “get to” Watson because of Holmes’ “pull” on him – then, well, you just may enjoy this piece of fluff. I am still waiting for a bold author who comes from a place of knowledge (translate: a gay man) or scriptwriter (come ON, Mr. Gatiss) to take the concept of a Holmes/Watson relationship, their love of a lifetime, and run with it… beautifully. These characters deserve that much.

Audio My Dear Watson narrated by Melissa Hearne

The novel simply plods along and, as another reviewer pointed out, it only comes to life in the 1919 dinner scenes. I should have listened to that reviewer.
