I love this series, but “On Borrowed Time” is not a good book. I only gave it 3 stars because I adore Lindsey Norris, Beth, Sully, Robbie, etc. — the characters who give this series zing. In this novel, even those terrific folks failed to save the story. Ms. McKinlay stepped out of the cozy zone with a story involving Lindsey’s nomad brother, Jack, and into the Robert Ludlum zone of intrigue with violent characters popping up all over Briar Creek. And sad to say, Ms. McKinlay’s forte is not thriller/spy. Oh, there were some hilarious bits with jealousy raging between Sully and Robbie, but the novel didn’t work for me. If you’re reading this series in order (the best way), I think you could skip this one without losing the sequence of the books.

On Borrowed Time series Library Lover’s Mysteries

I’ve enjoyed the series up until now but this book has been a disappointment. The main character, Lindsay, suddenly seems to have developed a case of the ‘stupids’ by not connecting obvious facts and otherwise behaving obtusely for someone who is supposed to be college educated and supporting herself. The competition between Robbie and Sully for her affections has become filler with no real purpose and their dialogs are almost insultingly boring and unreal. What I find oddest of all is the fact that Lindsay makes a point of mentioning her three cats near the beginning of the story, however, when her apartment is broken into and the door left open there’s no mention whatsoever of being concerned about them, whether they’ve been hurt or run away or for that matter, that they even exist any more. I hope this is book is just a fluke as I did like the first few books but it’s time to lay the Sully situation to rest one way or the other, keep or get rid of the cats humanely of course) and for Lindsay to get her brains back.

Audiobook On Borrowed Time by Jenn McKinlay

I have followed this Library Lover’s Series from Jenn McKinlay and enjoyed the previous installments, but I have to agree with some other reviewers who find the love triangle in this installment too prevalent. The two men, both of whom want the affections of the librarian, Lindsey Norris, are now spending time with each other (when they’re not busy chasing her), and they are trying to foil each other’s attempts for attention. It’s amusing to a point, but the lack of any real change is tiring.

There are a couple of action scenes, mainly on the water rather than in or around the library, and for readers who look for that in their cozy mysteries, this one delivers on that score. However, the mystery is otherwise rather thin, and the love triangle is very prevalent, so all in all, it’s a slow plot. I’m winding down on this series, but I do like Ms. McKinlay’s newer Hat Shop Mysteries. If you’re new to her books. I’d say give that series a try first.

Audio On Borrowed Time narrated by Allyson Ryan

Lindsay Norris is not only busy with her job as Library Director, her Crafternoon sessions, and the upcoming holidays, she is also struggling with trying to decide between\en two love interests -Captain. Mike “Sully” Sullivan and actor Robbie Vine. She has her hands full, but when her brother Jack pays an unexpected visit to her at the library and quickly disappears again leaving a dead body behind, Lindsay is willing to drop everything to find him. Little does she realize what deep trouble Jack is in and soon she too is in real danger.

The fifth book in Jenn McKinlay’s Library Lovers cozy mystery series, “On Borrowed Time” is a unique twist on a cozy mystery. In fact, in some ways it is more like a spy thriller than a cozy mystery – while was a murder in the book, this isn’t the type of cozy mystery where you try to figure out who the killer is. Instead, you, like Lindsay, wonder where Jack is, is he okay, whois telling the truth and who isn’t, and what exactly is going on? McKinlay does a wonderful job with this, slowly unveiling the story as she goes along. There are some thrilling and tense moments in this book – many of them taking place on the water – and I felt like I was right alongside Lindsay in those moments, cold and wet but anxious to find Jack. Mixed in with all the tension and action are very humorous exchanges between Robbie and Sully – I am not a big fan of love triangles in cozy mysteries but these two was so funny together that I was laughing out loud at times. I am happy that McKinlay lets readers get to know Sully better as a character in this book and we finally know why he acted the way he did a few books back. All of this leads to a very satisfying conclusion to the book, at least in my opinion .

Oh, how I love this series!!!! On Borrowed Time is more intense that the other books in the series because her brother Jack is in danger and she feels that her hands are tied. I didn’t agree with her decision to accept the warning not to talk to the police but it made sense that she would not take a chance of endangering her brother. As always, the characters are wonderful and the plot was intriguing. I wish I had a better way of saying that but the warmth of the characters and the unique plots are what hooked me in the first place.

It is Christmas time in Briar Creek, Connecticut. Head Librarian, Lindsey Norris is thrilled to find her Brother, Jack hiding inside the room she uses for the craft/book/lunch club, the Crafternooners. Leaving Jack to rest from his long trip to visit her, Lindsey is shocked to find Jack gone and a dead body lying on the floor upon her return.

Quickly, Lindsey realizes that she must protect Jack at all costs, and soon finds herself lying to her friend the Chief of Police.

This novel is filled with action, humor, steampunk activities, and kidnapping! Lindsay finds her secret being revealed to her friends and the two gentlemen vying for her hand. Finally the Police is brought in and the case solved, in a manner.

As for the romance simmering beneath the mystery plot, it appears to be finally decided as to which beau Lindsey favors. I, for one, am tired of the back and forth so was delighted by Lindsey’s choice.
