Queer Eye: Love Yourself. Love Your Life.

2018 was a ROUGH year for me. One bright spark of joy was…the Queer Eye show on Netflix! I’ve been a Jonathan Van Ness fan FOREVER so I was ecstatic to see that he was cast on the show. I immediately fell in love with the entire Fab Five team. The show was truly a ray of hope, joy, and optimism in the midst of a very tough time. When I saw that they had a book…I flipped out! I don’t think I’ve ever rushed over to Amazon so fast! The book is beautiful. I love reading a few pages every morning while drinking coffee. It inspires me to be kinder to myself and take better care of myself all day long. Bravo to everyone who helped produce this book! OK, now I need to go jade roller my face just like Jonathan instructs.

I got a copy of this book for myself and one as a housewarming gift for one of my friends. My friend loved it, it cheered her up as she has been going through a rough patch. Later, I finally got around to reading my own copy and was really disappointed with the content of the book. I wasnt expecting anything life changing or particularly profound, but in flipping through the pages this book wasnt super interesting to read through, and seemed like it was not much more than a hardcover magazine. There were a lot of pictures of the fab five and some pages here and there with blurbs covering really random topics. I love the show and love the guys because theyre so entertaining on TV, but I was expecting a more entertaining content to be included in this coffee table book. Im glad my friend seemed to enjoy it, however,
I donated my copy within a week of receiving it because I was so underwhelmed.

This book was a nice fluffy read, but some what didn’t meet my high expectations after loving the TV show with this group. I guess I was hoping more for an autobiographical deep dive into the Fab 5, and instead I got a superficial one and then half a book of “life recipes” that I’m quite frankly just beyond. I’m not going to start staging massive dinner parties at this stage of my life just to keep up with the Joneses, nor am I going to start branding my fashion style as a thing (as two examples). I found Jonathan’s section most helpful for simple grooming tips given I’m a simple lass, and his tips were fun like suggesting under-eye masks (yes that sounds lovely!) or why SPF matters (hello skin cancer warning). When Tan suggested everyone MUST have a cashmere sweater or booties in their wardrobe to even play, I just about choked on my lunch laughing. Clearly he must not deal with anyone who is always warm or hates closed toe foot wear (i.e. me).
So net = a good average read, 3 stars. No buyers regret, but won’t be in a hurry to encourage others read this unless they are truly unhappy with who they are and want some suggestions for improvement.

Madly in love with it, the packaging is well done also, not a single scratch 🙂

I am a big fan of Queer Eye but the physical condition of the book I received did not meet my expectations. The book had water damage and was covered in black marks and small stains. The pages of the book are not well connected to the book spine and are loose when reading. The content of the book is wonderful (including some recipes from Antoni) but I am disappointed in the physical book quality.
