Number 26 in his 87th Precinct series, Ed McBain continues his unique style. Out of the blocks, a man’s wife is brutally murdered, the man admits he is glad, a suspect is quickly identified, arrested and confesses; end of story, right? Not on your life’s, this is Ed McBain, remember. Detective Steve Carella has a suspicion, Bert Kling is in love again (with the wrong woman), seemingly irrelevant episodes, bits of humor interjected here and there and a surprisingly unsurprising (almost) conclusion, to name just some of the elements of this novel. But Hey! It’s McBain.

It’s a good old detective story. Enjoy it.

Sadie When She Died audiobook in series 87th Precinct

A good 87th novel set in the dark side of Christmas.

A woman named Sarah is found gutted in her apartment. Her husband found her but is not upset about it. Det Steve Carella suspects him even when someone else confesses to the crime. Det Bert Kling is now broken up with girl friend Cindy Forrest, he is now interested in a pretty young witness. We find out Sarah was living a secret life as Sadie a good time gal who likes both men and women.

The ending is fairly predictable, but I was more interested in the Kling/Cindy subplot, read this to find out what happens.

Sadie When She Died audiobook by Ed McBain

This is a very interesting story about a police officer working a murder case that appears to have an easy solution but as he works the case he starts to think there might be more than meets the eye. The characters have interesting lives which adds to the interest level of the book. There are several subplots which fit nicely with the plot and add to the story. The book is worth your time and money.

Sadie When She Died audio narrated by Ron McLarty

Sure! You have the detective Steve Carella. You have a wife who is vey dead and disemboweled (for certain). You have her husband who is quite delighted at her death.
You will discover her husbands lover (certainly). You will of course discover a love affair of sorts involving another detective. You will or will not discover who the killer is. A bit of a surprise – Kudos to Carella….
Very fast reading. I LOVE McBain!

Sadie when she died was an easy case for the 87th precinct, a robbery gone bad, the thief confesses, case closed, done, right? For some of the detectives of the 87 it might have been over but for detective Steve Carella it was just the beginning. What did he see that the others didn’t? What was the sticking point for him? What bothered him so much? For detective Carella the journey is just beginning and the answers to all of his questions will take time and patience.
