The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall

Interesting and well-written. A few too many spelling errors, though. I read this book, then Dragon’s Dawn and really enjoyed reading about the establishment of human civilization an alien planet. The threadfall and the accidental discovery of the dragons, their connection/bond with the younger inhabitants of Pern is creative and the author brings this to life with depth of the characters (the adults and their children) in a logical manner. Several friends have read most of the “dragon books”, and enjoyed them. First Fall and Dragon’s Dawn are my favorite. The other dragon books seem aimed at a younger audience, and so after reading several chapters of the dragon books I could not continue. But you may enjoy them, as they are well-written.

This is a great book but you shouldn’t read it till you’ve read Dragons Dawn, which is really the beginning of McCaffrey’s Pern books. Then this one fills in extra information chronologically before, during and after the activities of the first book, Dragons Dawn. The first short story in this book answers questions that the reader would have posed to him/herself while reading Dragons Dawn, about why the planet was allowed to be colonized, etc. The following stories in this book fill out Dragon’s Dawn without having imposed the information unnecessarily on the quick, easily-read flow of Dragons Dawn during it’s first reading. I loved this secondary book of short stories, and the way it was left till after Dragons Dawn to be read separately for all it’s insights. Great idea, there Anne. I give it 5 stars, as I do all of McCaffrey’s PERN books.

I read a lot of these many, many years ago. Now, there are additional books, so I’ve decided to read ALL the books again, from start to finish. I sure wish they would make a movie or TV series out of this. Yes, I’m aware of all the politics etc surrounding these books, but what a waste. A very engaging series that never gets old, even if you re-read them 30 years later. LOL Read them all. Don’t half-way do it.

This chapter of Pern’s early settlement history is full of drama, excitement, and answers … but not all, of course! I thoroughly enjoyed the tales and look forward to the next book in the Dragon Riders Of Pern series.

Great book! Great series! Gripping, drawing you into a world so well thought out, you can almost believe it really exists!
The first three are the best in the series, and this feels a little out of time, but it’s designed and written to fill in a lot of background that answers a lot of questions. Or, you can read it as one of the earlier books, drawing you through the series in a more chronological flow. Either way, I “HIGHLY” recommend not only the book, but the series!
