I loved this book. I’ve been reading the series in order, and I think this may be my favorite one. For one thing, there weren’t any scenes of characters I care about being beaten or tortured. I see that some readers missed what they call action in this book, but I thought it was a plus. For me, the fun of these books is watching Gabriel and his team in action. I also thought it added some depth to Gabriel’s character, in seeing how he cared about the English girl and, even when it seemed he could have much reason to be really angry with her, he never was. And I think the descriptions of Gabriel’s team in action gets more humorous with every book: Eli Lavon, a tracker, who is so good at following people that he can disappear when he’s shaking your hand. Or Mikhail, who is Gabriel without a conscience. And I laughed out loud at the scene where the head of Israeli Intelligence tries to keep Ari Shamron from listening in on the final Moscow operation.

The English Girl audiobook in series Gabriel Allon

This was my first time re-reading The English Girl in a few years and I loved it as much as ever. It’s still brilliant! Reading it again was a beautiful & spiritual experience. There’s something about the way Daniel Silva writes that resonates deeply with me. The stories are amazing but it’s more than that. The plots are cerebral. The characters feel like family. I get invested in the outcome. I feel like I’m there. He’s the best in the business and no offense intended towards my many favorite thriller writers, but if forced to read only one author for the rest of my life, it’s 100% Daniel Silva.

This book is fantastic. The plot is well thought out and executed, the characters all play vital roles and every scene/line of dialogue has meaning with not even one moment wasted. To me, it’s perfection.

Audiobook The English Girl by Daniel Silva

D. Silva writes an excellent novel that has enough basis in fact to make the story timely. Unlike Ian Flemings James Bond, the outcomes are realistic and there are no gimmicks or super toys. I only have two issues; neither of which is major. Since I am reading the “Allon” series in rapid order there is some redundancy in the character development of the ‘OFFICE’ team. If you can read the series in order it flows very well and you will know each character almost on a personal basis. The other issue is the quickest to come to the conclusion. Silva is better about this than the late Clive Cussler (may he rest in peace) or Tom Clancy; both of whom could end a 500 page novel in 10 pages. Ending a novel is difficult to say the least, but at least with Silva he makes the ending more realistic as to what might happen in the real world. I would highly recommend the series.

Audio The English Girl narrated by George Guidall

My favorite author. I finally got my husband—who is NOT a reader-to start this series. And now he’s hooked. We own every Silva book in both hardcover and kindle. I’m re-reading the series for the 5th time. During these wild political and health times, re-reading your favorite books and re-watching your favorite movies or tv shows is supposed to be a form of meditation. Regular meditation never worked for me. I do a lot work with Congress and am a former committee staffer for the Senate, and my exposure to the wild political stuff hits home A LOT. So Silva is my meditation. He gets better with each book. His style-is very soothing, despite telling a dangerous story. It makes me feel safe.

In the thirteenth thriller in the Gabriel Allon series, Silva has the art restorer/supposedly retired spy-assassin involved in investigating the kidnapping of a young woman who is a rising star in Britain’s governing party — and who is also the mistress of the Prime Minister. This investigation, which Allon is quietly handling as a personal favor to the Prime Minister in order to try to avoid a scandal that could destroy his career, leads Allon, and eventually his usual team of Israeli Intelligence operatives, on a mission that will take them to Marseilles, Provence, London and, finally, to Moscow. Typical in all books in this series, Allon and his team devise intricate, down-to-the minute plans laden with risk throughout the complex, multi-layered mission. Also reminiscent of most books in this series, the plot in Silva’s The English Girl seems to be ripped from today’s newspaper headlines. And, of course, consistent in a Silva thriller, his latest book is one of slow-building but non-stop tension and suspense that will likely make the reader anxious to turn the pages to find out what happens next.
