The Interlopers audiobook in series Matt Helm

This is the eighth book in the Matt Helm series. It might be true that there are some standard things that happen in these books (Who should he trust? What’s with that woman–are they gonna ‘do it’? Should he get beat up on purpose again?), but it hasn’t yet sounded like Hamilton has gotten at all tired of putting those elements together, twisting them up, and adding more, broadening things in one way or another (again and again). By now, I would’ve expected to feel like things were just being written up by rote (and someone reading this who doesn’t like the genre might reasonably think that’s the case, from their perspective), but I was a bit amazed at how Hamilton keeps these stories going so strong–this is completely recognizable as a Matt Helm adventure, in certain ways similar to previous great installments, but with differences that make all the difference in the world.

This is a good one to read after enjoying at least a few others of his. In my opinion, you should just start from the beginning (Death of a Citizen) and work through in order anyhow. (That’s what I’m doing, and so far, so good.) But this installment is maybe my favorite so far, simply because of the tricks he pulls, given what the readers are mostly probably expecting of him. Just jumping into this one, and expecting it to be as great as that previous sentence might seem to be claiming would probably lead to disappointment, though. What makes this such a great read is that it takes the Matt Helm series, and works such an interesting angle on what these stories do. Keep in mind I’m not saying he goes in a different direction, or changes the formula, though…

Audiobook The Interlopers by Donald Hamilton

I am sort of amused that some listeners comment that Matt Helm is ‘realistic’ spy genre which I think is pretty funny and I am sure Don H would revolve in his casket hearing that. The stories are always so far fetched they’re on the same credibility level as Bond; the characters are specially created to fit the formula and I am sure would never appear in real life – not ever. Matt himself is really a satirical pastiche of most of the leading male heroes and anti-heroes of mysteries, spy fiction and even western sagas: and in my opinion these elements are why the books are so consistently entertaining in that they never take themselves seriously and never pretend to be other than what they are. They are always interesting tales, the female leads are sometimes very irritating but I suspect designed to be so, and I salute the imaginative process that gave us these works. Great narration!

Audio The Interlopers narrated by Stefan Rudnicki

We find Helm on the Columbia River across from the Hanford Atomic Energy Plant in southeastern Washington State, which produced plutonium back in 1943, attempting to look like a fisherman with his Black Lab, Avon’s Prince Hannibal of Holgate; “Hank” for short. Helm’s primary mission from Mac is to kill a man named Hans Holz before he kills the President. Helm’s cover, as Grant Nystrom is to take over the real Nystrom’s courier route since Nystrom and his dog had met a fatal end. Helm’s cover, which is not very accurate, is planned that way to draw Holz in to eliminate Helm. Helm to assassinate the assassin. So much for the setup of the story. While fishing, Helm met a pretty young woman named Pat Belman who chatted about fishing and was quite interested in Hank. She had a bitch Lab that she wanted to breed and asked about using Hank, wanting to see his papers. Helm was unsure whether this woman was his contact or not. Pat Belman not so much, but Libby Meredith was. As the title implies, a youthful gang of interlopers is giving Helm all kinds of trouble. Eliminate or not? Helm has a certain antipathy towards eliminating females. He’s displayed it many times, and one of these times it’s going to fatally bite him in the ass. The dual mission took Helm and the overabundance of followers across British Columbia, Alberta, and into the Yukon Territory. It was quite the chase, leaving a fair amount of bodies along the way. All-in-all an exciting adventure. Hank was my favorite!
