I really don’t know why I keep buying this guy’s books. But I do. I guess I like the idea of Sean Dillion and the other various members of the not-so secret group but the writing is just barely so-so. The conversations are just awful and the action is so often remarkably unrealistic. Thankfully he doesn’t come out with these very often and I will never buy a non-Sean Dillion book of his but I guess I’ll keep buying them. He seems to be stuck on the “Master of AlQuaida” theme…over and over and over. If it’s remotely as true as he implies I don’t ever want to visit Great Britain again…seems like there’s terrorists under every tree and bush. But they must be pretty stupid…as the scene when 3 of them come and attack some women only to have the all give up when one of them gets shot in the ear. And the all don’t have guns with them…yeah, ok, that’s believable.

The Midnight Bell audiobook in series Sean Dillon

What happened to the suburb novels with just Ferguson, Dillon, Hannah Bernstein, and Roper….now there are so many heros with tortured pasts that I can’t keep them straight….Blake, Holley,Sara, Cazalet, Harry, Billy, and looks like hasim will be joining our band of saviors…oh and let’s not forget cousin Hannah whose story wrenches your heart ….at first….but I have to say that by the time she told her sad history multiple and I do mean multiple times, well my empathy for her was gone and she came off like a whining post adolescent with anger management issues. I mean really, a sleaze calls her a cripple (harsh but accurate) and she pulls a gun, rams it in his mouth, breaks his teeth and then tells him her sad tale to …what… demonstrate how tough she is…..Hannah Bernstein was smart, attractive, professional, and very tough but she was classy and would have put that sleazy bastard to ground without coming across a street thug. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed all of Mr. Higgins books even those written under pen names, this is the first disappointment…lets get back to Dillon and his adventures.

Audiobook The Midnight Bell by Jack Higgins

After reading all of Mr. Higgins books, over the many years I have been a fan, this new issue is without doubt, the worst storyline ever !. It is very choppy, moving from place to place all the time, and we are, once again, blessed with character background descriptions, which take up much space.. While I have to give Mr. Higgins credit, for writing yet another book, as the years roll by on Jersey, The Channel Isles, his home, I must say without doubt, that this latest publication was the most disappointing of all of his books…An intriguing, and captive reading plot, it is not.

Audio The Midnight Bell narrated by Michael Page

It seems that getting older hasn’t been a good thing for Mr. Higgins. His writing has become predictable and mundane. In this book Mr. Higgins often repeats character descriptions. It also always seems to rain in “torrents” . So much so that London would surely be suffering serious flooding. Also there is less differentiation among characters then there has been in Mr. Higgin’s earlier works. I don’t believe I will purchase another of his Sean Dillian books. They seem to be all the same story with less and less differentiation among plot lines.

I have been a faithful fan of this series for many years but this latest installment was disappointing. It just did not make sense. There was not a cohesive plot, just little situations that did not lead anywhere. Take Kate for example, what role did she play, what was the purpose of her character? How can she make that shot after a couple of hours of training? Her role wasn’t that important but immediately she was part of the inner circle. Hannah without any training suddenly is calling the shots. The Master did not have a specific plan and the end was too simplistic and rushed. No one ever pursued the idea of how he seemed to know everything so quickly. A mole perhaps???? The dialogue seems forced and extremely repetitive. The characters keep telling each other their background even though they know each other well. I do like the characters but I had to go back and read older titles to remember what this series used to be liked. Not the best book for sure.
