Can I just say wow?! This installment in the Bane Chronicles really stepped it up from the previous novellas in this series. The world\’s best trio is back…yes, Will, Tessa, and Jem are back (albeit very briefly). We are also introduced to Will and Tessa\’s son, James (or as Tessa calls him, Jamie!!). I loved this so much. Not only did it satisfy an ache I had from missing the TID characters, but it showed us a different side of Magnus that we don\’t normally see. You can tell how connected Magnus felt to Will, Tessa, and Jem, and how much of an impact they had on his immortal life, which says a lot. However, this book was also heartbreaking. There was one line in particular (when Magnus says goodbye to Tessa) that brought tears to my eyes. Finally, the one thing that I truly appreciated about this novella is the link to TLH (I think that is the current name of the future series). If this story is anything to go by, that series will be amazing! I can\’t wait to see what comes next in the Bane Chronicles! This is definitely a must read 🙂

The Midnight Heir (The Bane Chronicles #4) audiobook in series The Bane Chronicles

The fourth story in the Bane Chronicles takes place after The Infernal Devices (TID) series. I felt that this entry wasn\’t quite as good as the last one, but it wasn\’t disappointing to me the way the second entry was. In this story, Magnus returns to London after receiving a job offer from Tatiana Blackthorn. Along the way, he runs into a troubled James Herondale and meets up with some old friends afterwords. As Magnus reminisces about his time in London and deals with three very troubled shadowhunters, he learns that in the shadowhunter world some things change, some things are exactly the same and that some things are best left alone. There were a few parts of this story I really enjoyed, such as meeting James Herondale who seems to share a lot of traits with Jace. I liked the way Tatiana Blackthorn was developed from her small role in The Infernal Devices (TID) and her young ward is just as interesting. Magnus\’s musings on his relationship with Camille were also a good addition. The only real problem I had with the story is that I felt like it wasn\’t as much a Magnus story as it was a preview for TLH, which is the sequel to TID. As with the Clockwork Princess epilogue, where you have to wait for the City of Heavenly Fire to figure out what really happened, I was left feeling like I have to read TLH to really understand this story. The other Bane Chronicle stories have been able to stand on their own and I hope the next few stories in the series will go back to that. I will mention that I didn\’t like the ending of this one much, though it did give me some perspective on how Magnus handles his relationships with other people. That being said, this story is worth a read. It wasn\’t as good as the third story, but it was still a good story to read.

Audiobook The Midnight Heir (The Bane Chronicles #4) by Cassandra Clare Sarah Rees Brennan

***Warning! If you haven\’t read Clockwork Princess then you should most definitely NOT read Midnight Heir or my review for that matter******** Im torn with this installment, but not in a bad way though. I have been waiting for Midnight Heir ever since Cassandra announced the titles for each one of the Chronicles. I\’m hopelessly in love with Will and Jace Herondale (and most recently with Edmund Herondale too) so I was 100% fangirling at the chance of meeting yet another Herondale boy, especially one that directly descended from my beloved Will and Tessa Reading Midnight Heir was especially emotional for me, as I got the chance to see Will, Tessa and Jem together again, even though it brought back every single emotion Clockwork Princess evoked in me when reading it (I should mention that Clockwork Princess was a life changing book for me, the feels were just beyond overwhelming and my connection with the characters was like no other) and of course I felt like crawling into fetal position and crying my eyes out. Seeing Jem again was heart wrenching, and at the same time amazing, because you have the opportunity to witness once again the beautiful bond and unconditional love between Will, Tessa and Jem. I think the wounds Clockwork Princess left me with have not yet healed enough to revisit them so soon lol I loved James, he reminds me of Will and Edmund and of course made me think of Jace with his golden eyes *swoon* … it was a sad story though.. and as usual Magnus ran into it head on. I love that you can again see the real Magnus, his sensitive side and his need for helping others (especially Herondale boys)… What left me torn is that the story had no beginning and no end.. let me explain.. we start with Magnus finding James drunk and hopeless in a bar, obviously tortured by something but we don\’t know what.. and it ends with Magnus realizing that he is tortured by something (more than likely love) but we really don\’t know for sure, so it leaves us lingering… we meet Grace (which we find out has something to do with James\’ situation but we dont find out up to what extent) and we learn of Jesse Blackthorn, which we are led to believe is dead, but if you look at the genealogy tree in Clockwork Princess it\’s not so much the case… I guess the story starts with you knowing nothing and it leaves you again knowing nothing and we wont really have a chance to find out for a long time because Cassie hasn\’t even started writing the TLH series yet.. .so it may be a while until we know who exactly is Grace and how she is related (if she is) to Tatiana Blackthorn, the real story behind Jesse and what can possibly be James Herondale\’s torturous secret and mysterious powers… While somewhat disappointed at the uncertainty of the story I still very much enjoyed…

Audio The Midnight Heir (The Bane Chronicles #4) narrated by David Oyelowo

This installment of The Bane Chronicles is very different from its predecessors. It\’s dark and rather depressing and will leave you very confused – just like Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan want you to feel. These two authors thrive on their readers\’ emotions (just follow them on twitter and you will see). Spoilers for the ebook AND Clockwork Princess! Magnus Bane is back in London. We/he meet/s the mysterious James Herondale who is, despite being the son of Will Herondale and Tessa Gray; a child who is surrounded by love, completely miserable and who actually wants to die. What\’s the number 1 reason for a Herondale to feel tortured? Love (It\’s not explicitly said, but strongly implied). In The Midnight Heir, we see a lot of characters we have come to love from Cassandra Clare\’s The Infernal Devices series and their cameos are lovely and make you want to know more about their lives years after Axel Mortmain. Which Clare probably anticipated, because she is planning another Shadowhunter series about the generation after The Infernal Devices! Although this ebook is dark and makes you feel for James Herondale, there are some light and funny moments. Cassie Clare and SRB certainly know how to balance seriousness and lightheartedness (thanks to Magnus and a few other beloved characters). Magnus\’s struggle with immortality is addressed once again; he will live forever but everyone he knows and loves will die at some point in the future. The immortality issue already is a big topic in The Mortal Instruments, it\’s also mentioned in The Infernal Devices and it\’s like a golden thread throughout the Bane Chronicles installments that have been released so far. There are some twists the reader won\’t see coming and in the end, if they have seen the Clockwork Princess family tree, will be very confused and ask \”How does this work?\”. Readers with non-Clockwork Princess knowledge will still wonder what a certain \”Shadowhunter\” is up to and why they need Magnus\’s services. The Infernal Devices fans will certainly love this installment of The Bane Chronicles and maybe this ebook will also encourage some new readers! I enjoyed The Midnight Heir immensely and cannot wait to read more!
