This book continues the adventures of The Ember War. Although it lacks a bit of the originality of the first instalment in the series it is a good adventure and a good continuation of the series.

As the book blurb states the strike carrier Breitenfeld goes on a mission to discover what the ruins of the planet Anthalas holds. Naturally the mission runs into a few complications. The Xaros being one of them but not the only one.

There are some decent action although the majority of it is marine style action, mostly down on the planet. We also get to know a few new alien spieces including the QaResh who is pretty much running the show as far as far as the Xaros resistance goes. Some of the other aliens are not so friendly and some of them are, quite frankly, exhibiting the not so intelligent behavior of a human career politician. Obviously these d–ks are part of the problem and not of the solution.

The book does not really come to any form of conclusion. Although the Breitenfeld do succeed in their mission and manages to escape back to friendly territory there is not that much that comes out of the mission except promises for future discoveries and adventures. Breitenfeld is also sent straight on another mission so the book is pretty open ended. Having said that the twist in what they actually found was not bad at all.

It is a good adventure story even though it was a pretty fast read. I am pretty sure that I will pick up the next book in the series when it comes out.

The Ruins of Anthalas audiobook in series The Ember War

This may sound trivial, and probably is, so forgive me. However, it almost made me put the book down. In book 1, Hale’s brother, Jared, is a marine and in book 2 he’s in the army. Why? I’m certain the author could have figured out a creative (or simple) solution to keep him in the same service in both books.

Book 1, Chapter 10: “His brother, Jared, clad in armor identical to his but for its dark green color and 3rd Marines patch on his shoulder, jogged over and gave Hale a quick hug.”

Book 2, Chapter 3: “His brother, Jared, had opted to follow their father and grandfathers footsteps and join the army once hed finished college.”

Otherwise, I enjoyed this book and will still recommend it to others.

Audiobook The Ruins of Anthalas by Richard Fox

the Breitenfield takes its men and woman to planet which holds a piece of mining equipment that can help them produce the mineral to take out the Xaros. the Anthalas have been gone from their planet for years and the Xaros leave the planet alone. however, Hale and his crew find evidence that the planet’s occupants did not leave.

fantastic. kinda creepy, but in a good way. read on!!!!!

Audio The Ruins of Anthalas narrated by Luke Daniels

So most of humanity has been wiped out. We’re in an alliance with advanced alien beings who have been shaping human progress for over 60 years to prepare them for the invasion which destroyed human life on Earth but left a small pocket of survivors. These survivors are still apparently pawns in an intergalactic war with a species that is bent on wiping out intelligent life wherever it is found.

The actual story is better than my description. I guess I need to get started on the next book to see where this is going.

This book was not as good as the first, but it wasnt bad either. The story basically shows most of the main characters going out of their first mission to retrieve dead alien technology to help with the war effort. We get the first glimpse of the alliance the Earth has joined, the aliens behind the cubes, and a feel of how the space travel is going to work. As for the target planet, the plot was somewhat confusing at first, but as plot unfolds the planet and its mysteries are revealed. I plan to continue to buy this series.
