Deaver’s short novella, has crisp dialogue and enough dramatic action to make is a satisfying fast reading experience.

The lead character, Colter Shaw, is a risk taker who knows how to read tense situations and people well. This quick hostage standoff was entertaining and a straightforward and focused storyline.

I bought the Audible narration too, so I got the complete reading experience. Long enough to be entertaining and short enough to be interesting.

Although I was not disappointed and got what I expected with this brief but suspenseful thriller, I had hoped for a slightly longer story. It just ended before I was ready. Ugh!

to start the book is one way to get your attention! Jeffrey Deaver is introducing a new series with Colter Shaw, in this mini suspenstry for Kindle Single. Its a very quick, 30 minutes and is followed by the first 2 chapters of his new, full length novel The Goodbye Man, due out on May 12, 2020.

Colter Shaw is a retired cop doing missing persons work. This short story is fairly frantic with activity, short on development and long on dialogue, lots of which includes f-bombs and other assorted expletives. The prose is decent but theres not much of it due to the form of this piece.

Parts of the story were engaging but just when it got exciting or Id loose myself in the story, the chapter would break or the language would flare. This truncated form and author dont seem to make a great partnership, in my opinion

Audiobook The Second Hostage (Colter Shaw #1.5) by Jeffery Deaver

I enjoyed the first two novels in the Colter Shaw series, but this one just left me cold. The beginning and the ending had absolutely nothing to do with the main story. Shaw solved the mystery in an entirely unrealistic manner. The ending had absolutely nothing to do with the story, and was a total cliffhanger. No character development. Not worth the price. BTW, the last quarter of this short short story is just a preview of the next Colter Shaw novel.

Im happy to have the chance to be back in Colters world, The Never Game is one of the books I enjoyed the most in 2019 and I cant wait to read the sequel.

A Colter Shaw short story, given Jeffery Deavers ability to write short stories, this does not disappoint. Shaw normally is hired to seek and find people; in turn he collects the offered reward. This short has a good deal of pertinent information in it which keeps its pace moving nicely. It does give the reader a large twist at its conclusion
