Wham! George Michael and Me

Pre-Ordered the Audible so I could start it before the bookstore opened, sorry Amazon but couldn’t wait a day for a hardcover to get to me. Woke up at 2:58 am out of the blue and at 3:01 an email came that the book was available in my app. Now I know why God woke me up. Had a crazy busy day with endless meetings but listened to it all (on top of going to the bookstore to get the hardcover – the pictures and memorabilia are insane.)

This book was sooooo needed, it’s not only about Andrew and George but a necessary snapshot of the industry and the 80’s as it was.

It’s painful and poignant and beautiful. Andrew Ridgeley should be commended for adding this to history – may it serve to illuminate the contributions he made, George made, and Wham made to the music industry and world as we know it.

Wham! was a brief shining moment – an escape – and with the world the way it is escape is needed now more than ever. Thanks to this book and their music, the sunlight they brought to the world is never far away.

What a wonderful surprise. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the book, but I loved it. Andrew gives us a love letter to Wham! and George Michael. And to himself really too. It’s a heartfelt journey through their intense friendship, to their beginnings in the music and then the meteoric rise to international stardom. It’s a really interesting look into the music industry in the early 80’s. Thoroughly entertaining. Don’t expect Shakespeare. It’s written like you’re talking to a friend, and they’re sharing amazing family photos. It’s also a VERY quick read. I was a bit surprised at the size of the print, but it just makes it a fun, quick read. Beautiful story of music and lifelong friendship. If you are a Wham!, George or even just an 80’s pop fan, this book is a must.

This book was a well written account by Andrew. His poignant memoirs of Wham’s beginnings and his special friend with George was very touching to myself as a reader. Really fond memories of this group especially as the music and videos brought back memories of the year I graduated high school. I can still remember my husband telling me you gotta watch this new group on MTV. I was a true fan after that. This book is not one that I would give away. I will keep it along with my vinyl Fantastic and the last remaking of George’s last album I ordered before he passed but did not come out till around 6 months after he passed. I still cannot bring myself to open it. Andrew if you read your reviews I do hope you continue to write. You may not write songs anymore but you are sure a talented writer.

Andrew gives us a fantastic window into his friendship with George and some of the scenes behind their musical journey.

It is very well written with a flowing, conversational tone. Its also somewhat ironic that the bad boy of the group at the time has penned such a touching account of the human relationships in this story that developed over the years. Andrew may have been more sensitive and self-aware than others gave him credit for, or perhaps its a quality that only comes with age and experience. Maybe both. Either way, this book is informative and fun to read.

Andrew helped George realize his full potential, Wham! let Andrew live his dream, and their friendship has been a blessing to all of us. His side of the story is well worth reading.

I enjoyed Andrew’s conversational tone, and the photos. A pleasant, but ultimately sad, read if you’re a fan.
