Having grown up in Live Oak, I wasnt expecting to like this book, as those who arent from here seem to always want to paint the area as filled with uneducated, unwashed rednecks, which is untrue.
Grippando does a good job of avoiding that kind of thing, and is obviously a thorough researcher.
I hate a boring book. This isnt one of them, and it is based on actual events.
The very thought of a lynching in todays society is abhorrent, as it should be. The subject matter made me hesitant to buy the book but I wanted to see how the place where my family has lived since the early 1800s was portrayed.
I found it to be pretty spot on. Every town has its heroes and its zeroes, honesty and lies, the righteous and the corrupt.
I also found myself reading very late at night because I didnt want to put it down.

A Death in Live Oak audiobook in series Jack Swytek
This is a story about race relations and lynching and the public rush to judgment about a perceived racist. It explores some very difficult areas in an entertaining manner. I enjoyed this book very much, but thought it was way too short! Cant wait for the next one

Audiobook A Death in Live Oak by James Grippando
I have read almost all of Grippando’s books now. I was not as enthralled with this one as much as the others. For one thing, I felt it was on the slow side for almost half the book until it became more suspenseful. There were so many characters mentioned in the beginning that I lost track of who was who. I thought that Mark should have been a more likeable, sympathetic character and developed more. I couldn’t find much compassion for him. It was sad to me not to have more storyline for Jack and Angie. Also, Theo was pretty much relegated to a few mentions. The book ended quickly too. So, the second half was really good and that’s why I rated it a 4, not a 3. But I love all the other Grippando books!!

Doesn’t matter what he writes – legal, family disfunction, racially charged and adventure. You are always promised and get a timely and exciting novel. They go from the depths of despair and to riveting courtrooms, revenge to unfairness, and a grasp on the south and its culture and history. These are all “can’t put them down books.”
