Along with the memories of his grandparents, there are also some personal memories that Lyman depicts like the memory of the time when he fell in love for the first time and later got divorced by his wife. These events form a nice network between the past and the present.
No one can say that whether the past was pleasant for the man or the present as both domains had the benefits and drawbacks. The narrator of the novel i.e Mark Bramhall does not try to make the audience over emotional or sentimental rather he keeps a serious style in the narration which was acceptable for all.
