Potter Shandra Higheagle is riding across her Arizona ranch, getting back to basics after being gone from the land she loves for two weeks to teach a class and exhibit her work at an art show in New Mexico. She stumbles across a disemboweled body, launching another murder investigation. Visions from her dead grandmother help Shandra and Ryan, her personal deputy sheriff, solve the murder of the extremely unpleasant neighbor who ran illegal exotic game hunts on his ranch.

On the minus side: the copy-editing could have been tighter with this one (at one point, Shandra refers to the Apache Jicarillo Reservation, but the proper name is Jicarilla Apache Reservation; in another location, a character says Whose your doctor among other hiccups). I also struggled with the switch between the description of a characters actions and thoughts Hed felt Reds animosity and figured Randal was fooling around with other women. But the niece? He hadnt seen that. Ill go back and interview the nice alone and see if the incident was before or after Mrs. Randal threatened her husband. I had to keep stopping to figure out what was happening and would have preferred the characters thoughts to be set off in some fashion (maybe with italics?) from the actions. The hiccups took me out of the story and frustrated me, diminishing my enjoyment of the book.

On the plus side: Interesting plot about illegal big game hunting. Good description of Shandras pottery making. Likeable characters, even the supporting ones. While this series still falls in the romance dressed up in mystery clothing category for me, the mystery portions are enough to hold my attention, and I really do like the relationship between Shandra and Ryan the mix of cultures and their respect jobs, how they obviously care for each other and are taking time to get to know one another. I also like that Ryan doesnt poo-pooh Shandras dreams regarding the case, and that he respects her opinions and insights.

This is book three in an eight book series. Even though I got irritated with the mechanical problems of the book, I think I will read more. Im curious to see how the relationship between Shandra and Ryan progresses, and what happens with some of the other characters.

The whole series are really romance novels trying to pass as mysteries. We supposedly have a tough, independent woman heroine yet she can’t cope with fear and danger? She constantly does stupid things like discovering clues yet not telling her sheriff boyfriend, because she doesn’t want him to know she’s been sleuthing? Full of ridiculous romance memes like fluttering chests, etc. Author knows nothing about firearms, can’t tell a revolver from a semiauto, thinks shotguns and rifles are the same, thinks a .38 rifle is a real thing, etc.
It is possible for a romance writer to do good cozy mysteries (see Mary Daheim). But Jager’s books are a waste of time for fans of real mysteries. Not recommended.

Audiobook Deadly Aim (Sandra Higheagle Mystery #3) by Paty Jager

Shandra Higheagle is a potter living in a small town in Idaho. She loves her town, her home, her dog, and her friends. She’s a talented potter, but she’s also nosey. So when people turn up dead–two on her very land–she thinks she should be involved in solving the murders. The county detective assigned to the cases, and who is falling in love with Shandra, doesn’t generally agree. Shandra sticks her nose in anyway. These books are not heavy crime stories filled with lots of brutality and ugliness, but they are very good mysteries that leave you wondering until the end. he protagonists are interesting people with stories of their own to tell. Jager writes well and doesn’t spend a lot of time giving you paragraph after paragraph of information you don’t care about. My only complaint–and since I’m sometimes picky so most of you won’t even notice this–is, did Sharndra go to New Mexico or Arizona to visit galleries interested in her pottery? One page Jager says N.M. The next page AZ. And once in a while I question whether or not something is grammatically correct. A good copy editor should be catching those things. I find these books worth reading, and intend to read all in the series.

Audio Deadly Aim (Sandra Higheagle Mystery #3) narrated by Ann M. Thompson

This series is a nice blend of romance and mysteries. In the third there still not much about Shandra’s story.
Shandra is riding on her land when comes across a dead person as the animals were feeding on him. It was not a pretty sight. She calls Ryan Greer who soon arrives to take over the investigation. The body is identified as Shandra’s neighbor. He had plenty of enemies including his wife, the fish and game warden, his employees and he was a womanizer. The tale several changes of direction. The romance between Shandra and Ryan continues. The ending was a surprise to me, I didn’t see it coming.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book and series

4 STARS

I have liked all three books of the Shandra Higheagle Mystery series. It was pretty easy to guess who the murder was, but there were twists in the series that surprised me. I like the relationship between Shandra and Ryan.

Shandra finds her third dead body. This one was on her land and was more gruesome. She called Detective Ryan Greer directly.

Shandra Higheagle is a potter. She brought her land because it has the clay on her land for her to use. Shandra has had bad luck in romance department so she is taking her time slowly with Ryan. She has dreams and sees her grandma that has deceased and the dreams have clues for the mystery. Shandra is half Indian.

Detective Ryan Greer is more serious about Shandra but he is willing to take it slowly. He does take Shandra to his brother’s wedding to his old girl friend.

No one really likes the dead guy. He has private hunts on his land that is not all legal, sleeps around and treats his wife badly.

This is a fast read and enjoyable story. I will look for more Paty Jager books in the future.
