Fast paced and a thrill ride just like the rest of the Jack Daniels series. One of the reasons I didn\’t give it a 5 is because the typos, not grammar mistakes, but cut off words, was distracting. It won\’t stop me from reading book 5 though, typos happen. I probably have a few in this review. The other reason is it just got a little more action film at the end instead of suspense thriller. On the plus side, Michael Bay would approve. Bottom line, J.A. Konrath is a talented author and I can almost see him laughing with glee as he beats Jack within an inch of her life and then keeps her running. Maybe Detective Daniels needs to investigate him in the next book for torturing his characters. 😉

Book 4, in the “Jack” Daniels Mystery series I am fast becoming a huge fan of this series. As in the previous novels, the story unfolds at a good clip, kept me on the edge of my seat with nail biting action, subtle suspense and a page turning thrill ride till the very last page. If you haven’t read the previous installments no need to worry, you will not get lost in the back story the little there is is well balanced to put everyone at easy and be comfortable with the characters and their interaction. As far as I can see each story focuses on the moment rather than continuing in an episodic storytelling style. The pacing is fast, steady and never slows down. No breathing space between the hectic episodes. This is one heck of a story expertly plotted and wonderfully told. Jack’s story is told in the first person and glimpses into the villain through a third-person present tense narrative. Mr. Konrath writes the perfect bad guys, who are fun to hate and Jack is a perfect blend of tough and soft. Her partner Herb and her nemesis Harry McGlade join her in this fourth and greatest case….so far. This is one freaky and shocking story and here is the synopsis: Chicago homicide detective “Jack” Daniels faces her toughest adversary yet: someone who calls himself the Chemist is poisoning the city’s food supply. But that’s just the start of what he has planned, something big-really big aiming to kill fifty thousand people in the single biggest act of terrorism the US has ever seen. Can Jack stop him — and decide whether to accept boyfriend Latham’s surprise proposal — without destroying her reputation, her sanity and everything she holds dear?”

I love this series. As a native Chicagoan, I appreciate the care the author took in getting the details right. As for the book (series itself), well done. I love the characters. This is a non-stop thrill ride with heavy doses of irreverent humor (so much fun) and plenty of twists to keep me on the edge of my seat. While the book was great, I\’m confused about the clock reviews. Amazon glitch or is my mind playing tricks on me? If you\’re a fan of great thrillers, this is a must-read. Ignore the weird reviews for the alarm clock.

Mr. Konrath has done it again. Except, perhaps better in this book, because this book actually freaked me out! Give me a bad guy with a gun or a knife any day, and I\’m fine. That\’s enough to get my blood pumping, but that\’s not going to scare me in just your average mystery. Give me a guy who is going around a city poisoning people with all kinds of different toxins…and especially ones that can be grown in a greenhouse…and I\’m officially scared! I want the blood and gore that my imagination fills in the blanks on back!!! Scariness aside, this was another great book. It was another fine example of Mr. Konrath\’s writing style, and it was a gripping read. Jack was once again shown to be human by facing some very human decisions in her life, and I was rooting for her the whole way. And Herb gets out of Homicide, which is sad, and makes Jack angry. But, as usual, Harry is there to fill in. I know alot of people don\’t like him, but I have a grudging kind of like for him. He\’s kind of an oddball character, but I think in the end he means well. I truly love this series. Mr. Konrath writes the perfect bad guys, who are so fun to hate. And he keeps their identities hidden until an appropriate time to show who they are, which makes these books truly fun to read. I love the surprise of reading them. And Jack is a perfect blend of tough and soft – she seems true to life, not too good to be true.

As always, Jack Daniels proves her mettle. This time heading an investigation into the person behind poisonings throughout Chicago. Poisonings that have killed many civilians as well as cops, and show only signs of escalation. And it has become personal for Jack, her boyfriend being one of the victims. But no clues are being left behind, not even a solitary partial fingerprint. Will she find something — anything — to give a clue as to the identity of the Perl? Will she be able to piece together clues in time to prevent poisonings, getting to affected sites before too many have become infected? You\’ll not be putting this one down until you have the answers; you\’ll be a nervous wreck as you follow Jack\’s every move, praying she\’ll be able to avert disaster. Disaster that, in the end, could cost hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. If you like mystery, suspense, and thriller genres, you MUST read this one. And after you do, you\’ll be adding it to your favorites!
