When I first opened this book I had forgotten the details of the first book in the series. I thought these interesting people on the first page must be known to me, because they are so immediate, vivid and fresh. So I reread Finder and then dove into Driving the Deep.
Haha on me, those delightful people in the first chapter were barely mentioned in Finder. It was great to have the refresher of Ferguss personal story though, which is continued and deepened in this second book.
Palmers writing is detailed and fresh so I was able to follow the many techie bits. I could tell she knows her way around the information and cyber security world. She lets us in on the tech details of this future succinctly and entertainingly.
The setting in the habitats submerged in the deeply dark ocean of Enceladus was nicely resonant with Ferguss emotional state. After working himelf up to the major emotional challenge of returning to his childhood home to reconnect with his family, he is totally detoured by the attack on and disappearance of his adult family of quirky dear friends. His fears and grief drive him to do whatever it takes to find the truth. Which turns out to be quite involved on many levels.
These books remind me a bit, as with other reviewers, of Bujolds Vorkosigan series. There is the accessible writing style, the odd protagonist, and the future where we can delight in a multitude of planets, cultures, diverse humans, fun technology and faster than light travel. Plus, aliens!
There is great situational as well as verbal humor here but little of the flippant Scalzi style conversations that for me detract from the reality of the books reading experience, substituting one liners for depth of development. The characters, their thoughts and dialog are well rooted in this future world and in the characters as whole, well imagined people.
Hurray and I look forward to the next book!

Suzannes first book, Finder, was very good. This one is better. There are several plot lines weaving in and out, and coming together for a most satisfying end. The characters almost walk off the page; I am sure I would recognize them if I came across one in a coffee shop!
Ferguson is the Finder. He has a knack for finding lost or stolen things. He also has a knack for making friends and taking on more and more obligations. He is scrupulous, loyal, and persistent. He also has a much more negative opinion of himself than the people he meets and helps. In this book, Fergus goes on a mission to save and retrieve his friends, the Shipbuilders of Pluto. They were kidnapped and there is Something Very Fishy going on!
No spoilers. But buy this book! You wont regret it!

Audiobook Driving the Deep (Finder Chronicles #2) by Suzanne Palmer
I loved the first Finder book; the backdrop with the satellite stations all connected in space was really interesting and inventive and it had the humor and rhythm of Firefly with its space western culture and mood. I also loved the hero’s journey from being reluctant to engage with the locals to settling in for the big boss fight. So I’m even more impressed with the fact that this book doesn’t re-use the same environment, but creates a brand new one that’s equally as interesting and inventive and evocative of the best “deep under the sea” claustrophobic thrillers. There’s not a lot of great female-created science fiction these days (that’s not about being chosen as the alien’s love slave) so I’m hoping to see more of this author.

Audio Driving the Deep (Finder Chronicles #2) narrated by Paul Woodson
I love this series and I love the characters. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves great sci-fi and likes to feel like they know the people in books. In this book we dive a little deeper into Ferguss background and meet his friends from the Shipyard. Of course, there is the action, mystery, and excellent world-building that was present in the first book. I cant wait for Ms Palmers third book.

This is another excellent story by Suzanne Palmer that made me smile and feel happy about a man and his family. Or should I say families 🙂
The science fiction is great and imaginative, but it is the feelings of lost and found that make it complete. You need to read this book. Also the first one as well, it is just as good yet set into a completely different environment.
