Jill Mc Corkle is one of my all time favorite authors. I\’ve read all of her books. This was, by far, my least favorite. She is a masterful storyteller, but I couldn\’t figure out what story she was trying to tell. The characters were sad, damaged, and at times disturbing. The multiple povs and time changes were tiresome. It wasn\’t a book to take your mind off quarantine and covid.

What a beautiful book. Jill McCorkle is gifted in her ability to create characters that seem to real that at times I felt as if I were intruding on peoples lives. I read the book in a little over a week, really quickly for me, as I am a slow reader. I especially could relate to the characters going back and forth from the present to the past. I think we older people do that, at least I do. The author makes everything seem so real as she includes such realistic details. One of my favorite books this year. A real treasure. I plan to read other books by her now.

Audiobook Hieroglyphics by Jill McCorkle
When a novel receives starred reviews from Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist, it gets my attention. Hieroglyphics by Jill McCorkle deserves those stars. And more. It\’s a graceful book that captures your imagination with honest emotion and authentic characters, each struggling with his or her own troubled history. How do we survive the memories of those who did not survive? Jill confronts this question with insight, gentle wit, and plenty of compassion.

Profoundly affecting and beautifully written. Life, memory, fear, family, mortality. Told from multiple voices, Hieroglyphics is a balm for the human soul.

Heading toward the end, there was a mention of a matchbook, which made me ponder how the book might have tightened things before the end which, to me, showed what opportunities had been missed. This isn\’t to say that the reader\’s interest wanders, that the stories aren\’t real, fiction or fact, but that if only….
