Although it is not clear through the initial section of the story the novel is actually about racism. Octavia E. Butler wrote this novel to describe the social injustice in America and also in the rest of the world. The black people were once treated as slaves all over the world and then the emancipation movement provided them with civil rights.
Though the rights were provided to them none of the white folks celebrated this occasion happily. Octavia is of the view that hatred remains in the white people as they fail to accept the usefulness of the black people in society.

The author presents a twenty-six years old black girl named Dana who is sifted back in time somehow and there she observes a man who is drowning. When she saves the man she observes that he is a white man and not only this he is a big slave owner.
The story continues, at first, Dana does not understand the motive of the whole thing. Slowly as she goes closer to the slaves she observes that the slaves are part of her family. Dana’s great grandmother was somehow linked to the white man whom Dana saved. If she had not saved the man then the future of her family would be altered. Kim Staunton narrates the story of a girl who saves the past from changing and then comes back in time to save the present too which involves her existence.

The author has also written Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents but this is the first book she ever created. It depicts the themes which the author likes for her works and also shows her interests from the beginning of her career. From this first book, she was strong in the description and the construction of the plot was rock solid.
