News of the World is a fictional novel. It is written by Paulette Jiles. She is an American memoirist, poet, and novelist. In fiction, The Color of Lightning is a fine novel by the author. You will probably find Simon the Fiddler novel even better than the first one.
Grover Gardener proved to be the best choice for narrating this novel. It was a very powerful performance and it made this audiobook so appealing to the listeners.
News of the World
In March 1865, the bitter and long war amid the States is finally winding down. Simon Bouldin, a 23 years old guy till now has managed to evade military duty. This was all thanks to his youthful appearance slight stature and lack of regret about bending the truth. But after a barroom brawl in Victoria, Simon discovered himself conscripted right into the Confederate Army.
His talent luckily with a fiddle got him a fairly comfortable position comparatively in the regimental band. A few weeks later and on the Confederate surrender eve, Simon along with his bandmates are called in to play for the officers from either side of the conflict. It included their families as well. There the fiddle was not able to help at all but did take notice of the charming Doris Mary Aherne. She was from Ireland and was working as a governess to the daughter of the Union colonel. Simon and Doris part their ways after the surrender and things changed drastically.
The author and the narrator of this audiobook deserve full marks for their respective work. It was a thoroughly entertaining book with some excellent characters and a storyline.
