The Devil Colony

I have read some of Rollins books, but not in order. About a month ago I decided to go back to the beginning and read them in order, and thereby purchasing the books I had not read. And, since I was at at I might as well buy the audio books, too, right? I am amazed at the in-depth works of these novels. Somehow he blends friendship, military actions, science, the spiritual, secret societies, conspiracies, family and love into books you cannot stop reading until the very end. And if you take time to read the information he writes after the books end…well, let’s just say it makes you want to hug your loved ones, then take a nice cool drink and go sit on the deck and wait for the end of the world.

Not exactly being an avid reader, I first was introduced to James Rollins Sigma Force series book by happenstance, an event I am thoroughly grateful for. The Map Of Bones book was picked up my girlfriend as a means to pass time between lengthy flights between Europe from the U.S. Fortunately for me, the in-flight media held her attention both directions leaving the book unread for several months. In a spout of boredom, and in pity of the unopened book, I cracked the cover and was immediately hooked. Any one who has read a James Rollins book, I’m sure, can relate.

Being hooked on the Sigma Force series, I recently acquired the Devil Colony in order to appease the Rollins’ addiction. In normal style, the book opens with a peek into the not so distant past, this time it the late 1700’s in Kentucky Territory, with a mysterious story of treasure, mystery, and murder with ties to the Founding Fathers of the United States, Lewis and Clark, Secret Societies, and Native Americans.

The story only gets more engaging and exciting as it moves into the present, when a lost treasure resurfaces and threatens to destroy the world, the
fate resting once again on the cunning and strength of the infamous Sigma Force. James Rollins once again delivers an evocative book impossibly weaving technology, history, and religion. Buy this book.

The Sigma Force series is a pretty well-written action/adventure series with well developed characters and story-lines that wander through the annals of history aligning James Rollins’ imagination with authentic, usually violent, events and locations. I loved this novel as much due to the Native American story line, as well as the significant time spent with the iconic Painter Crowe, and the environmental angle from the First People’s point of view based on their mythologies. The author has honed his craft revealing a sagacious perceptiveness with this thought provoking tale of morality and corruption. I quite enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to readers.

Mysteries about the native tribes who populated the New World. Margaret Grantham was an anthropology professor at Brigham Young University overseeing the Native Indian outreach program. Professor Henry Kanosh was a Shoshone historian, raised as a Mormon, and Maggie’s working partner. A short tryst proved they were better as friends than as lovers.

By trespassing ancient curses and breaching the inner sanctum of the Holy of the Holies’ Chamber at the heart of the Mormon Temple, Henry could see the brilliance of Joseph Smith’s original tablets. Volcanoes now erupted in Iceland and hydrothermal explosions rocked Yellowstone. The Guild determined to destroy all connecting evidence.
The family weed in the garden was Ghent. Henry understood the connections instantly. Cool shivers of understanding tingled along his spine.

This was my first Sigma Force read, the Founding Fathers aspect pulled me in, and WOW, I was not disappointed!

There is non-stop action across three centuries, involving a host of participants I have great interest in- Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Meriwether Lewis, the Tribes of Israel, pre-historic Caucasoid American remains, the sudden extinction of some advanced Indian nations, and nanotechnology. I am amazed that Rollins combined all these into a compelling action-packed book!

For me, the one weakness of the story is the nanotechnology. I had trouble accepting it as a totally chemical process. However, carbon nano-fibers are produced by heating a solution of certain carbon-containing compounds and drawing off the fine residue produced by combustion. If early people were able to refine some carbon compounds and place them in solution, they could have produced carbon nano-fibers! So, I suspended my disbelief and thoroughly enjoyed the roller coaster ride this story took me on!

I was hoping that the dog would get a bionic leg! He certainly deserved one!

Now I will have to read the previous six books. Oh well…
