It is mid- July and I have finished “The New Girl” by Daniel Silva. The book was a bit longer, so thankfully I didn’t read it one sitting. But still it will be a year before Gabriel Allon appears again. I know Mr. Silva isn’t already writing, he’s touring but I would seriously like him to get to work. I don’t know how I got lost in the character of Gabriel Allon but it was many years ago. He is serious, dangerous, lovable, with a very dry humor that can make you laugh out loud. I don’t know how to a review a book. I’m 66 years old and no longer remember spelling and the rules of grammar or punctuation. So anyway: Over time the character development has been wonderful. The novels are always are jaw clenchingly fast paced. At no time do you suspend disbelief. Everyting, no matter how outlandish, is believable. You want to meet these people and have take you everywhere they have been. You want to hug Gabriel and fall in love.
This author ruins me for weeks. I can’t pick up another book. No one writes this incredibly well. Books by authors I love become trash. Daniel please go home and started.

The New Girl audiobook in series Gabriel Allon

I’ve read all of the Gabriel Allon books. The earlier novels in the series are fantastic. The last several have been lackluster and The New Girl is no exception. Unfortunately, I was duped into believing this was a great book based on a 10/10 review from a reputable reviewer. It is devoid of any real suspense and the only surprise happens on the last page of the book. A character from earlier in the series, Sara Bancroft, is shoehorned into the story for no valid reason, and then only to whine about her lack of a love life. The main problem with the story, and possibly the series, is that Gabriel Allon is no longer as interesting since he became head of The Office and a married father of two. It’s also impossible to suspend disbelief that the head of Israel’s intelligence agency, who at age 65+ is out in the field putting himself in danger on a regular basis. The other problem is Daniel Silva’s reliance on current events to drive the plot, as well as his blatant political leanings. The events he derives his plot from occurred at least a year prior to the book being published and are old news, and his political beliefs detract from the story. I read spy fiction to be entertained, not to be reminded of depressing real life events. Perhaps next time Silva can come up with an original story, instead of regurgitated world events. Maybe it’s even time to think about creating a new series with a new protagonist.

Audiobook The New Girl by Daniel Silva

You’re a Saudi prince and your only child is kidnapped. Who ya gonna call? An Israeli global super-hero, of course. Once more, Gabriel Allon leaves his desk at The Office and treads familiar ground with his new friend, who is a frantic father, spoiled, autocratic, billionaire; and probable murderer of a dissident journalist. Before we’re done, the richest and most powerful man in the world will send assassins after Gabriel and try to bring down a kingdom or two. There’s the usual Shabat dinner at the desert fortress of Ari Shamron; the gathering of Gabriel’s veteran team of battered professionals and their romantic histories; the midnight car pursuits through Europe; Gabriel refusing to sleep, eat, or drink anything while he’s on a mission; and tradecraft, lots of tradecraft. Many secret plane rides to London and Washington. A rehash of the previous four or five novels in this long, successful series. It’s all so familiar, so repetitive, yet Silva manages to keep us turning the pages far into the night. He has built this plot from recent events that are still unfolding, which makes the unlikely friendship of a prince of oil and a prince of fire seem like wistful fantasy. Yet we keep turning those pages. That takes real skill.
Everyone will see this book through the prism of their own political views. Gabriel is operating in real time now, and it becomes hard to separate the spy thriller from the nightly news. Silva is candid about how this novel took an entirely different direction after the horrific murder of an American resident Saudi journalist only last October. Is it as good as the earlier books? Not for me, but I can say that about any mystery or suspense series I’ve followed over decades. The New Girl is timely, and more quietly terrifying, than Silva’s more recent books, and worth reading.

Audio The New Girl narrated by George Guidall

I would have thought by book 19 I might lose interest in this series, but it is just as good as the first one. I wait impatiently for each new book and this one does not dissapoint. It is most certainly a page turner and I sometimes read a page too fast just to see what will happen next. Read the entire series, it will be worth it, trust me!

Admittedly I’m addicted to the Gabriel Allon series, and with good reason. This book has everything – Daniel Silva’s informed view of world affairs; the heart-stopping exploits of the spy networks of several countries, and Israel in particular; the interpersonal relationships that make fans of this series such a loyal and enthusiastic group; and Daniel Silva’s deft touch in telling a story. The story revolves around a kidnapping and power struggle in Saudi Arabia, and the bad doings of Putin and the Russians, with Gabriel Allon and his agents and allies in the middle of the mix. We get more of a view of Allon’s personal life in this story, which is delightful. Some heart-stopping moments as well – really, I had to stop reading a few times to steel myself before reading what happens next! I highly recommend the whole Gabriel Allon series of books, and The New Girl in particular!!
