Yes I Can Say That

Comics often say what we think or they challenge us to think. We have free speech (for now) in America but what does that really mean? Judy dissects the history of comedy and censorship in an insightful way using real examples from the past and present. Lest you think this is some dry Ted talk, it\’s not, it\’s funny and at time outrageous exploration of the fine line comics walk when discussing this insane world. I was thoroughly entertained from the moment, Judy discovered her comic while watching Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer on television. Most moving is when she writes about the late, great comedian, Joan Rivers. I really did not want this book to end.

Judy Gold is a national treasure. So it should be no surprise that her book is also one. She combines great stories and anecdotes of her past career and personal life with comedy history. For comedy buffs and comedians, this is a must read. From stories of comedy pioneers like Joan Rivers to the recent censorship of comedians like Nimesh Patel, this covers it all. Judy\’s writing style makes it a quick and easy read. The only bad part was the last few pages because you just want to read more. Can\’t wait to see her live and for her next book!

I always knew Judy Gold was a funny and brilliant comedian, author, teacher, etc. but this was a greater gift than expected. Each page I turned made me feel I was getting smarter as I laughed. Her observations of people, protests and politics is accurately researched. The history of comedians and comedy was wonderfully informative. What the f*** else do you need to hear?

I felt a disappointed. I get political jokes, but I felt that she \”just had\” to cower to those on the left – you know, cheap shots at President Trump and those who voted for him. I felt like it was a bit forced, like checking off the \”gotta hate on Trump\” box, to prevent the cancel mob from the leftist Twitterverse. I did enjoy how she outlined the history of comedians and censorship. I also felt okay with how she dealt with the Cosby issue. But the overall feeling I had after finishing was disappointment.

I laughed out loud and learned so much. A perfect book, in this uncertain time…..both enlightening and highly entertaining. Thank you, Judy Gold.
