I thoroughly enjoyed myself with this one, for one reason: Sonja Fong. From the first sentence, she pulls you in and you can’t help but root for her and want to be her.
She’s self-assured, confident in her skills, and knows her value. She’s a strong female lead that knows what she needs to do to get her stuff done, and it’s amazing. She was sooo refreshing from other heroines who are so bogged down in their own maelstrom of the “boo-hoo me’s,” especially when it comes to men. She can take ’em, or leave ’em, either way is fine for her. And her parents are so cool! Can they adopt me?
And sure, you have some mild pining for what her friends have, but that’s normal. It shows she’s human and has vulnerable spots like anyone else.
The hero, Will, was a touch bland. But mostly because he a slight case of the “boo-hoo me’s,” especially when it comes to love and his parents. Granted, this gave him room to grow, but it’s a short novel and the focus was more on other aspects of the book. He could’ve been more, but that wasn’t the purpose of the story. What we do get is a vulnerable guy who doesn’t trust very easy, but can’t help the pull of Sonja anyways. And THAT’s the draw for him. Well that and his selkie nature, which is pretty darn cool.
Overall, this was an excellent read, a great pick-me-up from the mires of the day, and I love the progress in the explanation and further exploration of the Rift, and its related issues. However, I would’ve appreciated a little more rounding of the secondary characters because i have hard time placing who each person is. But maybe that’s just me lol.
As for their relationship, they had good chemistry and decent communication. Until the climatic “blow up,” which was a little annoying, because they usually have good communication. I felt like even after the whole bad guy plot, it needed more resolution (aka groveling) to make it up, and give them more rounded coupledom. But other than that, it worked well.

Audiobook Selkies Are a Girl’s Best Friend by Molly Harper
Editing glitches caused an overall 3.5 rating which I am rounding up to a 4. I loved the story!
I am enjoying the Mystic Bayou paranormal series by Molly Harper and Selkies are a Girl’s Best Friend/#3 was no exception. SAAGBF can either be read as a standalone title or as part of the series. I recommend both SAAGBF and the series to anyone who enjoys light paranormal/fantasy suspense romances and/or HEAs, with the caveat below (last paragraph).
SAAGBF is about a developing relationship between a human woman, Sonja Fong/FMC and a Selkie/Merman shifter, Dr Will (think Jason Momoa). Will grew up locally, left town decades ago to earn a doctor’s degree, worked in the medical field elsewhere and has just returned to the Mystic Bayou community to open a family clinic treating the local shifters and human community. First circumstances and later danger throw Sonja and Dr Will together. Both Dr Will and Sonja have issues from the past they must work through to get their HEA. SAAGBF is a quick and enjoyable read.

Audio Selkies Are a Girl’s Best Friend narrated by Amanda Ronconi
This is a light read that will keep you very entertained. Sonya Fong is everyone ‘s girl Friday. She is the daughter of spies and is very able to do just about everything. Jillian is Sonya Boss, past room mate and is very pregnant with Bael’s a dragon shifter baby which we cannot see because it is in a metal egg. Will is a 75 year and looks 35 old selkie Doctor who came home only to find out that there is a need for a Doctor. The rift is getting stronger, mutual attraction between Will and Sonya, and bad guys are about. Light romance, mystery, and urban fantasy make this a delightful book for all. Mild violence and sexual content.

Mystic Bayou is an excellent series, a novel twist on fairy tales and paranormal romance, and totally engaging. I want more from Mystic Bayou. The overall theme is a rift that is causing havoc with the fae and normals alike – this has been sorted by the end of book 6 but surely the author can dream up another threat or issue to weave her romances around. The town and its characters are too interesting to have them disappear
