As with all of the Hornblower novels, this one is beautifully paced with delightful character development. It is my belief that Forester intended this novel to be the culmination of the series, ending as it does with Napoleon’s final defeat at Waterloo. Hornblower has achieved everything but flag rank, attaining his peerage and, seemingly, able to settle into family life at Smallbridge.
A ship-board mutiny calls him back into service and ends up plunging him into supporting a Bourbon resistance in Le Harvre, at the cost of his long time colleague and friend, William Bush. Later, he returns to the household which sheltered him during his time on the run in France during Flying Colours, the home of the Count de Gracay, and back into the arms of Marie de Gracay. She too loses her life when Napoleon escapes from Elba and the Count, Marie and Hornblower fight across Brittany in the Bourbon resistance. Thus two parts of Hornblower’s story are brought to an end. Fortunately for us, Forester was able to pick up missing periods of Hornblower’s life to add to the canon, in the series, starting with Mr Midshipman Hornblower, Lieutenant Hornblower, Hornblower and the Atropos, and Hornblower in the West Indies.
As Forester states, there were further barnacles on the wood that developed, thus we get the final books written: Hornblower and the Hotspur, and the unfinished novel, Hornblower and the Crisis which has Hornblower now retired and still dealing with a Napoleon. There are good reasons to read the novels in the order written, though I started with Lieutenant Horblower back in 1962 while I was still in high school.
These days, on my regular re-readings of the series, I tend to read them chronologically, starting with Mr Midshipman Hornblower, and enjoying finding the little inconsistencies in the early novels, especially the first written, The Happy Return; Hornblower was never garrulous for example. Do enjoy the experience, they are beautifully character driven novels, incorporating exploits of Lord Cochrane and Lord Nelson, but, I believe, that the personal traits of our hero are probably closer to CS Forester himself than either Cochrane or Nelson.

Lord Hornblower audiobook in series Horatio Hornblower (chronological order)

Fortunately, most of this book is another excellent Hornblower book. But the last 20 percent was just average, bordering on being ridiculous. With all the other reviews here it’s not necessary for me to go into much more detail than that. I thought it was a four-star book, typical of the outstanding merit of this saga of a legendary character. I’m only about halfway through the Hornblower books and am looking forward to reading the rest. As others have noted, Forester did not write the Hornblower books in strict chronological order, so I caution readers of this book not to draw any conclusions before you complete it.

Audiobook Lord Hornblower by C. S. Forester

The book Was an excellent read. I enjoyed it immensely. It was filled of Action and excitement. I cannot wait To read The next Book and the series.

I enjoyed the book and how it brought to close one of my favorite characters. I many of the books in the series in the 1970s and remembered how much I enjoyed the then it was great catching up with the story again and finishing it. I recommend the series to everyone looking for adventure.

Audio Lord Hornblower narrated by Christian Rodska

The book started out good. Then, it went into a tailspin when Barbara arrived with them royal folk and messed things up. The book rapidly devolved into a soap opera with tales of romance gone bad. When HH cheated on the first wife, no one cared. He never should have married. When HH cheats on Barbara, with a former love, Forester becomes the writer of a soap opera. Barbara is off partying while HH is at home bored until he gets an urge for Marie. Marie pays the price when HH gets bored in France and decides he needs to sneak out of France before Bonie has his way with HH. Bush gets killed. Bad thing. Brown gets married. Good thing. Marie dies. Bad thing. HH just goes on never happy with what he has and always grasping for something new while sweating about keeping hold on the old. Had I read this book first, I never would have read another HH book. I hope the final one improves for Lord Hornblower.

I have read all but one of the Hornblower Saga. This one shows Hornblower in a different role that of the man, who has to make the hard decision that will effect the lives of others. I will try and not give away too much of the book in this review. By the title it is obvious that Hornblower has reached the peerage of England by his action at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. But he is a man, who has lost greatly twice due to the Wars. I rank C.S. Forester’s Hornblower with Bernard Cornwell’s Shapre and Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey at the top in historical fiction. The feel of the period is like you are there in that time. Hornblower is a man, who is human and at the same time a representative of a very rigid social class- a British naval officer. He cares for the men serving under him, yet he is not one of them. So let me say this last thing Hornblower is in a different element than the high seas, but he is still Hornblower.
