A Darker Magic

I have faithfully read EVERY book in this series. It’s become one of my absolute favorites. Hell I’ve read most of the books 4 or 5 times already. That being said, zombies. Glynn, why in the hell would you bring zombies into the story? Seriously? The only reason I finished this book is because of my love of the series, otherwise I’d have put it down and never picked it back up. Hell, if it had been paper version and not electronic I’d have burned it after reading it just so I’d never have to see it again
Zombies, mind control, no Damien. This was by far a disappointment. Waited on pins and needles for next book and I got a space opera/magic/walking dead mash up. Zombies are ridiculous and were so out of place in this world you’ve built, come on man, you are capable of so much more.

I have really enjoyed this writer and this series in particular….but this book is not good. First, I am 56% of the way through this slow boring story and Damien Montgomery was only, very briefly, in an introductory scene…no, the entire book is about Roslyn. If you are asking yourself “who is Roslyn?”…you are on the right trail. Roslyn is the former troubled young lady who spent time in jail and Damien set on the correct path in the Navy etc….but who cares. This is what I keep asking myself as I try to push through tghis uninteresting boring book about a character I don’t care about. I have stopped reading it. 56%. That’s your benchmark. If you make it farther than me you’re a better person than I am…Boring.

It was good. It has a strong ending but it only a small part of the larger story. Almost like this is Book 1 in a 3 book new story arc.

I think there needs to be a new spin-off series with Rosalyn. I was expecting a book that at least had Damian in it most of the time. Damien was in the last book almost 50% of the time in this book it is like 1%. Like I said I like Rosalyn I just can’t wait for Damien to get back to the stars. If not that I expect to see some aliens in the next book.

This has been one of my favorite series with the hero, Damian Montgomery, overcoming many obstacles to rise in the Protectorate of Mars…this book marks the second book with Rosslyn Chambers taking the main character role. Overall, as a reader who falls in love with main characters, and not worlds, I would prefer a return to Damian Montgomery as the main character with a new arc in the series where he has to confront the return of humanity’s enemies returning from the stars…I also wondered if Nemesis, the organization that assasinated the previous mage king, is still trying to get Damian on the throne… If we must transition to new books with Rosslyn Chambers, could there at least be more scenes where Damian and his wife are shown? I also enjoy seeing the politics of the Protectorate…

When starting this story I went back to see if I missed a book in the series there’s a gap between the last book and this one. Again Damien Montgomery gets a reduced roll a few pages at most, yet advances in his life are totally skipped over. Roslyn Chambers seems to be taking over the MC roll along with Zombies, and IAW another reviewer an estimated release date of fall 2022 for the next book I am not going to hold my breath for it.
