A Long Petal of the Sea
It was the era of the late 1930s when Spain was under the influence of the Civil War. General Franco succeeded along with his Fascists in overthrowing the government while thousands of people were pushed hard to flee over the mountains and go through the French border. Roser was one among them. She was a pregnant widow. She discovered her life to be intertwined with Victor Dalmau who was an army doctor. He was also the brother of her killed love. For the sake of their survival, they must get into marrying each other which none of them desires. Both, Victor and Roser along with 2000 other refugees set off on their journey to Chile on the chip. The SS Winnipeg ship was chartered by Pablo Neruda, a poet. The couple went into exile while remaining in Europe went into World War. They had to face one trial after the other, while things were never easy for them.
This novel is full of wonderful characters and it is beautifully written as well. The performance by Edoardo Ballerini was also quite special. The audio production quality was somewhat compromised a bit and that needs to be rectified.
