Nicole is busy saving the people of the earth as an astronaut as she cannot save the earth from the upcoming tragedy, at the same time her husband is trying to get the seat of the president.

This is quite absurd for the woman because she thinks that this is not the right point to take part in such a thing as soon none of it will matter to the world. Elma is also carrying on the good work i.e shifting people to another place because the process of destruction has finally started on the earth.
Mary Robinette Kowal in the first part gave us the hint of destruction when she wrote and narrated the eradication of the dinosaurs. Humans are going down in the same way i.e as a result of a meteor. Colony on the Moon is in the establishing phase and then there is Mars too where Elma is sent for the process. Time is quite short and there is a fuss on the land too as everyone knows that all of them will not be taken to the new colony.

The Calculating Stars and The Fated Sky had some hope for everyone but now in a short time, only those will survive who will get a ticket to the new colony. Even if the rockets try to come back for more humans they would not be given any chance to return by the meteor.
