Well, the one thing I can easily say about BLACK ICE is that it was definitely… different.

It’s been a while since I’ve read an Anne Stuart novel and I forgot how bad her heroes usually are. And by bad I mean really bad – dark, cold, and ruthless are just a few of the adjectives that come to mind. Bastien is not nearly a nice man, not even to Chloe who I liked but also thought had some too stupid moments. There were a few times I could hardly believe such a strong and seemingly intelligent young woman could be so naive, but there you have it. However, for all of Bastien’s callousness, it was nice to see him finally and truly care about something or someone – and that was Chloe.

With that being said this book was totally unpredictable and always kept me on the edge of my seat. I never knew what to expect from Bastien or his cohorts either for that matter. They seemed just as likely to slit each others throats as not. And that’s another thing about Bastien, he has a couple of intimate scenes with a female associate of his. Personally I never like seeing any hero (or in this case even an anti-hero) have any sort of sexual contact with anyone besides the heroine, so this ticked me off a little. It was completely fitting with his persona however, so I can’t say it came as any real surprise.

Overall this story was action-packed and wholly intriguing though, and I’ve never read anything quite like it. I also thought the chemistry and connection between Chloe and Bastien was strangely unique too. And while the ending felt somewhat rushed and wasn’t entirely satisfying, I still enjoyed the story on a whole. I do wish it had included an epilogue though, as I still have a few lingering questions about this couple’s future and how they’ll make their relationship work. Regardless, I’m glad I read it and am looking forward to Book 2. I just hope we’re able to get an update on Chloe and Bastien then.

Ages: Chloe (23) Bastien (32)
Pages & Kindle Locations: The story contained 377 pages and 3855 kindle locations.

This is the beginning of a new series that also centers around agents of the Committee with Agent Bastien actually falling in love with Chloe an interpreter on an operation he had been working on. She replaced her roommate Sylvia and she even lent her all her clothes and shoes to innocently fill in for her. Things turned dangerous as these people were arms dealers and were fighting for control. She got caught snooping on a computer and was being tortured by one of them when Bastian an undercover Committee agent saved her. This is where their love story begins as time after time he saves her life and even gets shot in the process. At the end he almost died for her but the Committee finds him near death after he took a bullet for her once again after he dropped her off with her parents safely. As he is recuperating a Committee agent Jenkins finds him and warns him Chloe is in danger once again. Naturally he goes to her and does his best to protect the love of his life after he professes his love to her. It is non stop action with the Committee coming to their rescue and he finally retires to be with her in North Carolina. This is an amazing suspenseful love story as Sebastian( his real name) and Chloe get their happily ever after. I cannot wait to read the next release in this exciting series.

Audiobook Black Ice (Ice #1) by Anne Stuart

I discovered Anne Stuart years ago when I was still reading Harlequins and Silouhettes. I always liked her dark heroes. I read this , years ago and really enjoyed it, however, this time around I found the heroine, Chloe to be wishy washy and childish. Don’t get me wrong, I have always kept her books around for re-reading because of her heroes. The characters were put upon by danger and mayhem which would frazzle anyone. Chloe just didn’t feel right in this story. I gave it 4 stars because I am a fan of the author’s style and flair.

Audio Black Ice (Ice #1) narrated by Jennifer Van Dyck

Ive never read any Anne Stuart novels, but I decided to pick this up because it was on a gamma hero list and I was interested to read more books involving not so heroic heroes. I typically dont enjoy contemporary romances with dark love interests because they are usually over the top, but this wasnt a billionaire romance, so it worked out well. Bastien was obviously some sort of agent/spy. Chloe was just an innocent translator who took a job in place of her friend and landed herself in the wrong place.

I enjoyed the book. Chloe wasnt some crazy kick ass heroine, but she wasnt an emotional doormat, either. I felt like her character was realistic and likeable. Bastien was mysterious and I think he treated Chloe like he hated her because he really wanted to get through a job without complications. He was rude, gruff, and yet he always did the right thing for Chloe in the end, which was interesting.

If you like romance and like that dark hero who has more depth to him than a stupid closet filled with S&M gear, this is a great read. I hate what passes for dark contemporary romance these days with the 50 Shades stuff, so I really loved that the book had a believable dark hero in a world that wasnt paranormal.

Anne Stuart is an author who is new to me, and Im kicking myself that I didnt trip over her earlier.

Black Ice is terrific. Tense, action packed, the violence vivid but tempered. Kind of like the original Die Hard film in tone and atmosphere, but on paper. The writing struck me as a bit old-school at first, right up until I realised I was reading pure quality for the first time in some years.

Chloe and Bastian are an unlikely couple. That they get their HEA makes for a fab romance. Brilliant characters, especially Bastian who is so far from being a hero hes the very devil. Loved it!!!

Impressive enough that on concluding Black Ice I immediately downloaded the rest of the series.
