Oh my gosh. This book is just awful. It starts out ok, although the writing is rather simplistic. We learn about her childhood and her early days singing. Then it starts to bounce around. At one point we learn that she is pregnant, but we have no idea who her husband is or when they got married. (yes, she was married) In fact, she never mentions his name, and she had 3 children with him. This marriage ends in divorce. Not many months later she meets and marries Jay Barker, one of my alltime favorite players for Alabama. The second half of the book is just a bunch of tips on beauty, marriage, dieting, child rearing, and how wonderful she is. I love her singing, but I wish I had not bought this book because she is very self-absorbed, and it is very unbecoming. I couldn’t finish the book. It was just too boring. Sorry Sara, just keep to your singing. You do that very well!

Born to Fly is called a memoir, and I guess it kind of is a memoir. I feel that there was not a lot about Sara Evans. She shares her childhood through her early twenties with the readers. Once she has her son (her oldest child), the book changes from a memoir to a lot of different advice books all in one (self-love book, a dieting book, a handbook to have a better relationship with God, a marriage counseling book, parenting 101, how to deal with anxiety, a guide to dealing with kids and divorce, also a guide to parenting with stepchildren). I would have enjoyed reading more about her career and becoming the highly successful singer/songwriter she has become, but we don’t much about her career at all. I did enjoy reading the few pages about her opinion on Bro-Country and the lack of radio air time for female artists.

The writing style is easy to read. Maybe in the future, there will be a career memoir available.

Audiobook Born to Fly by Sara Evans

First, I am a Sara Evans music fan and looked forward to this book…am also a big memoir fan. I would call this first part of this book a memoir..even though brief and not extremely personal. But the second half of the book is just preachy sections on motherhood, being a wife, religion, etc. Had to skip the last half and the book is not the long to begin with. Sorry Sara.

Audio Born to Fly narrated by Sara Evans

Of course Sara Evans’ music is great, that we all know, but what a treat to go inside her childhood and music career to learn more about what makes her tick. The near death experiences were crazy to read about! It’s so refreshing to hear an artist give the total truth on what happens in their careers – the good, the bad, and the ugly. Everyone always assumes that it’s glamorous and easy, but you have to respect someone who’s worked so hard and fought for what they’ve achieved. Reading about how hard Sara worked to try and achieve Country Radio hits makes me respect her even more. Country Music artist seem to be told to just put on a happy face and smile and grin and act like everything is ok, even when it’s not. It’s so nice to read the truth from Sara’s perspective. Something I wish more artists would do! Bravo Sara!

I enjoy reading all types of autobiographies and love to read about peoples lives. As a writer myself, I look for a story that is told in dialogue. I want to know what people are saying to each other; it makes the story more interesting. The best stories I’ve read contain lots of dialogue. I missed that in this book. Also missed the organization and time lines so I got a little lost in time as dates were not always given. The story is easy to read and simply written which I liked very much. I also appreciated her willingness to share her faith in God and could see her strength as a courageous woman. I hope she will continue to hone her writing skills and use dialogue more freely in the next story she will be writing.
