“Orange Is The New Black” is a fantastic series available on Netflix, which is widely associated with the talented actress Kate Mulgrew. However, my personal connection with Kate goes back to her iconic role as Captain Janeway in “Star Trek,” and even earlier, I remember her portrayal of Mary Ryan in the soap opera “Ryan’s Hope.” Although I didn’t watch the soap series frequently due to being in school at the time, Mary Ryan was adored by many viewers.

Kate Mulgrew’s journey as an actress is truly remarkable, and she knew from a young age, growing up in Iowa with her Irish parents, that drama was her true passion. Her mother’s friendship with Joan Kennedy, part of THE Kennedy family, proved beneficial for Kate and her family. Despite facing challenges, such as her mother being a dilettante and not an exceptional cook, they had a loving and secure family life in their charming old house in the woods.

Moving to New York City to attend Stella Adler’s acting school, Kate’s talent quickly landed her roles on stage and television. Her beauty and charisma attracted a string of boyfriends and lovers, with one of these relationships leading to an unplanned pregnancy during her time on “Ryan’s Hope.” Kate made the courageous decision to give her baby up for adoption, an experience that left a profound impact on her for many years until they eventually reunited.

Throughout her successful career, which included marrying and having two boys, Kate navigated both triumphs and hardships. She divorced her husband while her career thrived, and she had several lovers while exploring the world and providing for her children. Unfortunately, she also faced personal tragedies, such as the loss of her sister to a brain tumor and her mother’s battle with dementia. However, amidst the ups and downs, Kate found love with a man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.

The most heartwarming part of Kate’s story is her reunion with the daughter she had given up for adoption. Meeting her daughter for the first time in Cambridge, Mass, was a moment filled with emotion, and they built a loving relationship from there.

Having read Kate Mulgrew’s captivating memoir, I can attest to her exceptional writing skills. She has lived an extraordinary life, sharing all its dramatic moments, highs, and lows. Her journey is a testament to the resilience and strength required to flourish in the world of acting and beyond. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next chapter in her life, as I’m sure it will be just as riveting as the first. Drama indeed has been a defining aspect of Kate Mulgrew’s life, and she has embraced it with grace and courage.

Born with Teeth audiobook

Kate Mulgrew is an accomplished actor who has performed on stage, in films, and on television. She may be best known for playing Admiral Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager in the late 1990s. She currently stars in Orange is the New Black. Mulgrew seems to always have an acting role – she’s a hard working and in-demand performer.

However, the characters audiences see on screen are only one facet of a complex individual. Mulgrew is also an author, having penned a memoir titled Born With Teeth that provides insight into both her public and private life. Yet at times, I felt Mulgrew wrote about herself from a distance.

A memoir differs from an autobiography in that it covers less time, and is more selective. Mulgrew’s memoir captures moments along her journey, omitting or only briefly referencing certain experiences. This choice left me wanting more details at points. For example, she would mention her parents and siblings, including the deaths of two younger sisters, but not expand on these relationships. I assumed marital troubles between her parents, but never learned what transpired. Since she portrayed them intriguingly, the lack of follow-up left me curious for more. Had the writing not been so skilled, I wouldn’t have cared about those in her orbit. But the quality made me interested in learning more.

One area Mulgrew does delve into fully is the birth of her daughter when the actor was in her early 20s, and the subsequent closed adoption. For years Mulgrew sought information about her child’s whereabouts from the uncooperative Catholic adoption agency. Though she later married and had two sons, reuniting with her daughter remained an unfulfilled longing. Eventually they found each other through the very organization that had obstructed Mulgrew’s search. She touchingly conveys their reunion.

In one misstep, Mulgrew shares a story about a deceased friend who was sexually abused as a child – likely too personal to disclose without consent.

Overall, Born With Teeth provides thoughtful perspective into Mulgrew’s efforts to balance her acting career with personal relationships. I only wish she had been more forthcoming on certain individuals who clearly played major roles in her life. The memoir is well-crafted, but could have provided an even deeper look into the woman behind the characters.

Audiobook Born with Teeth by Kate Mulgrew

When I picked up Kate Mulgrew’s autobiography, it was primarily because I admire her interactions with the Star Trek fan community. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book goes beyond the typical celebrity memoirs that focus on their achievements and personal relationships. Instead, it offers a heartfelt and candid account of her life. While Kate doesn’t emphasize strict timelines, her storytelling remains captivating, and even though knowing dates might add context, it’s not essential to appreciate her narrative.

The organic and seamless manner in which she shares her life feels like she’s sitting right there, presenting a slideshow of her experiences. It’s remarkable how she swiftly moves through significant events, drawing connections that have shaped her into the person she is today. From the very first page, I was engrossed, and the book’s flow kept me hooked for about four and a half hours until I finished it.

Kate Mulgrew’s ability to propel the story forward with such ease is truly commendable. I wholeheartedly recommend this autobiography, especially to fellow Star Trek enthusiasts, as it offers a unique perspective on her interactions with the fan community. However, even if you’re not into Star Trek, this book is a compelling read for anyone who enjoys authentic and engaging autobiographies.

Audio Born with Teeth narrated by Kate Mulgrew

Reading Kate Mulgrew’s autobiography, I couldn’t help but feel a bit intimidated to follow her train of thought, especially since English is not my first language. However, her brilliance and impeccable language skills actually benefited my English language studies. It was as though I had stumbled upon a new literary genre. While I had read memoirs before, none of them had the same romantic and captivating allure as this one.

Kate’s unapologetic nature and her ability to effortlessly capture attention make her story all the more appealing. At times, her bold actions might be hard to grasp, and the stories from her childhood may seem almost surreal. I found myself pondering for days about the mystery of her deceased sister, the first sister.

Yet, amid all the complexities, I discovered a common thread that resonated with me deeply. Her experiences of having a daughter and giving her up for adoption, surviving sexual assault, enduring a failed marriage, facing rejection, and witnessing her mother’s illness all struck a chord within me. Through all these recollections, not once does she express self-pity, and that, to me, is truly awe-inspiring.

Kate Mulgrew’s courage and resilience in the face of life’s challenges are remarkable. Her ability to share these deeply personal moments without seeking sympathy is beyond amazing. This autobiography has been a profound journey for me, both in understanding her life and in improving my grasp of the English language.
