Hawke is in way over his head. After his father\’s death, he is forced to become alpha of his black bear shifter clan. His dad wasn\’t the best of alphas and, needless to say, the clan was left in financial turmoil. Also, kids are skipping school and a lone black bear has been spotted in grizzly shifter territory. Hawke just can\’t seem to catch a break. The lone black bear turns out to be his one and only true mate, Echo. She however, doesn\’t really know about the whole mate thing, actually she doesn\’t know about any black bear traditions or history. The Grizzly clan she has been living with since she was a baby constantly berates her and treats her as an outsider. That doesn\’t stop them from making her cook, clean, keep inventory, do laundry, deal with finances, and guard the perimeter. Her life is miserable, but she can\’t escape due to the large metal shock collar around her neck, that is until she meets Hawke. Echo is so thankful that Hawke rescued her, but she starts to feel like a burden. That\’s all she has ever been told that she was. A burden. Their actual relationship (I mean they are mates…) develops rather slowly. It is pretty adorable, yet awkward at the same time. You have to remember, Echo is completely unfamiliar with black bear customs and is learning about all of their mating rituals for the first time. As you can guess, there is a whole lot of blushing! My only real problem with Burden was how things were worded. Some of the dialogue just didn\’t seem all that natural. I just wanted a bit more, especially some lingo from the bayou! That would have been REALLY fun to read! But, other than that, Burden was a cute story. I really loved the plot and thought that Echo and Hawke were really great for each other. Both of them were extremely thoughtful and caring. Also, I absolutely loved the character of Martha. She was completely relatable and super sweet!

This book…is…awesome!!! Perfect balance of romance, humor, and a tug at the heart strings. My favorite thing about this book is that it has the perfect amount of romance without it basically being written porn. I personally am not in to super sexual books, so this is a win for me. I only hope that in the next book we still get to have a glimpse into the Alpha and Coeur’s life. I know the next book is focused on Rev and Martha…but I guess I will have to get the next one to find out.

Audiobook Burden (Bayou Bear Chronicles #1) by Lila Felix
I don\’t read a lot of shifter books but I do read a lot of YA and books for teens. I love Lila Felix books because she is so committed to writing stories focused on romance, but that still read clean and with a young adult voice that is right for her intended audience. This book is kisses only-fades to black. A clean sweet romance is not easy to pull off these days, but she did it so well with college aged teens who fall in love in her Love and Skate books, (oh sigh) and now she\’s done it here with Burden. (Double sigh and thank you). Echo and Hawke are a compelling couple. Bear shifters is the coolest idea ever. Echo has gone through a lot, but like many of Lila\’s characters, Echo has inner strength and a heart big enough to overcome and to love-despite Hawke thinking she\’s a burden. I love the sexy, alpha male protectiveness of Hawke and how he cherishes Echo (all while she drives him crazy and vice versa). This book has butterflies all over it and it\’s a great character driven and emotional read. If you are looking for page turning, consistently clean, teen reads with characters who value honor, promises and family–also strong friendships–Lila Felix books are ones that you can enjoy and you can recommend to teens and adults of all ages. Can\’t wait for the next in this different, inventive and swoon worthy series!

The book is ok. I like the fact she used bears as shifters instead of werewolves, even though they are also mentioned in the book as another clan. What I didn\’t like about the book is the use of swear words. The author did not use it all the time and because of this I don\’t believe there was any need for it. It felt like she was trying to make it more grown up. The second thing I had a problem with is that the heroine was treated badly for 21 years so I expected her to have some issues. So when the hero took her she fell into his arm quite quickly. What I mean is she went to his room in just a few days (just to sleep of course). She did not have any friends at all in this other clan that she was kept in and yet she made friends very quickly with nearly everyone in the new clan. Also we don\’t really know how she is feeling emotionally sometimes. The author says that she has doubts with the hero at the beginning and that\’s it. She does not expand on that at all, she brings it up here and there to remind you she has doubts. It\’s the same when she told the hero she loved him. First I thought It\’s too soon for her to fall in love with him and second she didn\’t tell us how (emotionally) she got to that point. She does this quite a lot which I found annoying. The hero was a lot better we got a more in depth on his emotions. The third thing which I found really hard to believe is that she has no education, the other clan would not let her go to school so she had to teach herself. Yet this other clan let her do office work! And in the new clan she solved there financial problems the other educated clan members couldn\’t. She sound too good to be true. I found her to be too perfect. I must admit that it put me off the book.
