Darth Plagueis is a novel that is a mix of Canon and Legends in the Star Wars Universe. It was one of three novels that the same author wrote close in time, only one of which (Tarkin) was brought in as Canon after the Disney takeover of Lucasfilm. But, that novel refers to events in this one, so some of what is in this novel are Canon.

The novel is in part about Darth Sideous’ master, Darth Plagueis, who, like Sideous hid in plain sight. In the case of Plaguies, he was a Munn banker named Hego Damask. He takes on Sheev Palpatine as an apprentice and the two live out under the “rule of two” plotting to take down the Jedi. The novel is as much an origin story for Palpatine as it is about Darth Plagueis. It is set mostly before, but partly during the events of The Phantom Menace. It opens with the murder of Plagueis by Sideous and then flashes back 35 years to chronicle the rise of both Plagueis and Sideous. Then it ends during the events of The Phantom Menace. One notable change that has been made in canon versus this novel, in the book, Sideous takes Maul as an apprentice before he kills Plagueis. That has been retconned in canon (according to Wookiepedia anyway) so that Sideous kills Plagueis earlier in time before Maul becomes his apprentice.

Overall, the book is very well-written and has a nice blend of action and the same kind of political intrigue, scheming, and backbiting we saw in The Phantom Menace. We do get some insight into Plagueis’ powers and his quest for immortality, and we see just how ruthless Palpatine was, even when he was younger and less powerful. Even though it is a legends novel, it is definitely worth reading.

Star Wars: Darth Plagueis series Star War

I great book that covers a crucial part of the Star Wars story that is only touched on in the films. It also builds on the intelligent aspects of the prequels often overlooked by those to impatient to notice them. Moreover, it incorporates ideas from other Expanded Universe authors (something I always really loved about the EU) . The book is certainly worth a read and is just another one of the many examples of how the Star Wars franchise was far better off prior to the Disney acquisition that replaced originality and intellect with greed and laziness. If something is labeled “Legends” this Star Wars fan suggests giving it a look.

Audiobook Star Wars: Darth Plagueis by James Luceno

The story is compelling, once it actually starts. Imagine the opening scroll of a Star Wars move…. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away….lasting for 25 minutes before the movie starts. That’s how this book felt.

There were opening scenes very much needed for the context of the story to be told, but then a LOT of filler. The actual story does not begin until around page 140.

Then there are SEVERAL scenes of politicians sitting around tables conspiring politics. It happened so frequently that it was easy to just glaze over.

The meat of the story however, was very well done. The backstory or Palpatine, the ambition, the drive, the work behind the scenes with the Sith, all well done. There was just a lot of filler that didn’t move the story along and could have been deleted without impacting the story.

Audio Star Wars: Darth Plagueis narrated by Daniel Davis

I have been hearing that the Plagueis novel is one of if not the best novel in legends continuity. I see why. The depth of the lore and the way it connects to the prequel trilogy is great. It sets everything up so nicely and allows us to see the inner workings of Sith training in the rule of two era. I hope Disney draws heavily upon this novel in future content. Their new show the acolyte will be coming soon and this novel will serve as a firm foundation.

You won’t be too lost on what’s going on as this takes place around The Phantom Menace time period, so there’s a lot of familiarity going on. Learning more about Palpatine, as well as his Sith Lord master Darth Plagueis. James Luceno does a really good job bringing this world to life, and this book no doubt is one of his best.
