If you are a claustrophobic reader, this book might be a bit difficult. Two people are buried underground for much of the book and it was hard for me to read, I found myself gulping for oxygen more than once! Jessie has a couple of new cases, both missing persons. One of them had a satisfactory ending, the other made me rage. I know in real life justice isn\’t always served, but I wanted some justice for poor Penny. The pedophile coach case that came up in the last book takes a violent turn and Colin investigates. Ben\’s name pops up as a suspect, and Colin already finds something \”off\” about Ben, so I expect this to come to a head in the next book. Ben is revisiting some old crime stories he wrote, and things just keep getting darker and creepier where he\’s concerned. The ending was pretty chilling, and I hope Ben\’s story is at the forefront of the next book. Thankfully Zee\’s chapters are there to provide some humor when the subject matter is dark, her new relationship was a bright spot.

Disclaimer: I love T.R. Ragan\’s spell-weaving, tale-spinning, dark-delving fiction. I picked up \”Buried Deep,\” the fourth of the Jessie Cole series, via Kindle early, about 5 a.m. and went to the athletic club, reading on the stationary bike, and finally finished it late that evening. Yes, it was a slow day at work so I read more than just for lunch. I finished the night before I wrote this. But once I start in on one of Jessie\’s new cases, actually she gets a couple in Buried, I just have to untangle the conclusion. This morning as I was riding my bike up into the not-so-far reaches of the Sierra, leaving civilization behind, I thought how Ragan\’s mysteries remind me of Dashiell Hammett, who I became obsessed with in college. My roommate and I loved the \”The Maltese Falcon\” when we saw it together as kids but mostly because it had Humphrey Bogart. Then the two of us began consuming mass quantities of literature, mostly American crime fiction and fantasy. I digress. Still, my point is (I get kinda spaced out on long-ass uphill rides) that Ragan delves into the unknown like nobody\’s business. Jessie\’s employee, Zee, who talks to unseen voices, really got to the heart of suspense, drama and random behavior. The cases Ragan created beat the crap out of Dateline. Missing mom and missing daughter who nobody really wants but has money coming really intrigued me. The missing mom. Cripes. Reminded me of when my mom sent me away overnight to another state to live with my grandmother on an island. I wouldn\’t see my dad for about seven years. Still love that crazy old man who tried to drown his fear of the SS officer who almost got him when he was hiding during WWII. Normally I write pretty standard reviews. But I just got an immense high (nothing to do with California\’s state weed) from this one. And really anything in the novel I\’d mention would be considered a spoiler. Perhaps the most intriguing part of the book has to do with Ben Morrison, the Sac Bee (or whatever she calls it) crime reporter. Ben\’s got these issues. He lost his memories. He\’s got a dark past. But he\’s saved Jessie\’s life. He\’s rescued her niece. He\’s a badass. And good reporters are a dying breed anyway. I should know. And damn if he doesn\’t get perhaps the choicest piece of gristly mystery. Ragan ends with him. It\’s good. Something about women writers. Ragan got me reading them. The detail. The twists. The damn-straight resolutions. I will now swear (Samuel L. Jackson-ish) for emphasis.

Audiobook Buried Deep (Jessie Cole #4) by T.R. Ragan
When it comes to this book that saying \”save the best for last\” comes to mind because that is exactly what TR Ragan did with this book! I was hooked from page one and read every chance I got. It\’s very possible I could have finished it in one setting but this thing called life kept getting in the way. The book starts out with a bang. I mean like guns blazing. And just kept getting better and better. I love how TR Ragan effortlessly and smoothly intertwines the different story lines without confusing the reader. You are never at anytime lost or wondering whose storyline you are in. I have come to love the characters. especially Zee and and Francis, Marion and Lucy?! 🙂 Ben\’s character adds much intrigue! I find his whole back story fascinating, intriguing, and mysterious. I love where the TR Ragan took it at the end! For me it was the perfect ending for Ben\’s story. I really enjoyed reading this book.. Its just a fantastic book and a great way to finish the series. I hate that these characters, that I\’ve come to love so dearly won\’t be around anymore. I get so attached. However I\’m looking forward to what TR Ragan has in store for us in the future. In fact there is already a pre-order for the next book. Its called……. Don\’t Make a Sound (Sawyer Brooks Book 1) I\’ve already Pre-ordered. The way TR Ragan ended this series was perfect. Some may not like it but for me it was an outstanding finale.

Audio Buried Deep (Jessie Cole #4) narrated by Kate Rudd
Jessie is hired to find a mother disappeared 30 years ago. Jessie is also hired to find a woman that disappeared over 15 years ago. Jessie sends Zee out on her first solo case, the missing mother, while she focuses on the other missing woman. Meanwhile, a death in town appears suspicious and gets Colin looking a little closer at Ben. None of these stories intersect, which is nice since so many books have interwoven storylines these days. Ben & Jessie have no interaction in this book, which is strange since they were investigating/or their paths crossed in the first 3 books. There is just enough work / life balance (Jessie, Colin and Olivia) to make this story tangible.

T.R. Reagan brings her characters to life with the twisty storyline of Jessie Cole Book 4. The cases that Jessie, a PI and Colin, her Detective boyfriend fall into plus the main protagonist Ben Morrison, a journalist and a man with a dark past that he cannot recall due to after affects of a severe auto accident swim around one another like sharks waiting for for a morsel to drop into the middle of their pod. Hard to put down.
