Death of a Citizen audiobook in series Matt Helm

When i 1st read the Donald Hamilton books In the 60s, I enjoyed them a lot, thinking them a kind of American version of the James Bond
Books. Re-reading them now it sems a little different. In some ways they are more Mickey Spillage/Mike Hammer than Ian Fleming/James Bond. While the plot Of Death of a Citizen with Matt Helm being dragged back into his Assassin role is interesting and fairly believable, It is a very disagreeable book. More so perhaps than even some of the later books when Helm is on his missions, as opposed to the personal aspect of this 1st book. Not as good as I remembered.

Audiobook Death of a Citizen by Donald Hamilton

This series is for you. Please bear in mind this particular book (the first in a series that stretched 25 years) was written circa 1960, so its heavily dated in many ways. But it you can handle a time before Google, cell phones, PCs, and commonplace transcontinental and international travel, and want to read about a genuinely tough protagonist that doesn’t posture, doesn’t get all angsty, and seldom second-guesses himself when confronted with violent opponents, this is it. Although the violence is not really graphically described, there is a lot of it. Suffice to say, the stakes in this series of books are extremely high, and the rules match the urgency of the circumstances.

If you want deep, cerebral characters, if you’d be debating morality when confronting violent attackers, if the thought of shooting someone in the back when you know they are intent on killing you, if you like the verbose chatty-chat-chat so prevalent in Hollywood offerings these days, avoid this at all costs. The protagonist here is intelligent, resourceful, and consistent in being willing to use any means at his disposal to stay alive in a dangerous profession. He comes across as more realistic than all the Liam Neesons, Steven Seagalls and Van Dammes in all the movies they ever made.

Oh, and if you ever saw the absolutely imbecilic Dean Martin movie of the same name, these books share absolutely nothing with that film except the character’s name. While he has a dry wit, there is nothing really “amusing” about the protagonist in this book.

Audio Death of a Citizen narrated by Stefan Rudnicki

Published in 1960 to acclaim and praise, DEATH OF A CITIZEN was the first novel in what was eventually a 27 book series about American espionage agent and assassin, Matt Helm. Typical of the praise heaped on author Donald Hamilton and his creation Matt Helm aka Eric was this review by noted author and critic Anthony Boucher, “Donald Hamilton has brought to the spy novel the authentic hard realism of Dashiell Hammett; and his stories are as compelling, and probably as close to the sordid truth of espionage, as any now being told.” Anthony Boucher, The New York Times

Unlike his rival Ian Fleming, Donald Hamilton strove for cold, hard realism in his writing. Only toward the end of the Matt Helm series did Hamilton begin to add some of the silly gimmicks of the James Bond tales and movies. Apparently that is what the public came to want in spy stories. The four Matt Helm movies starring Dean Martin are, if anything, even sillier and more unbelievable than the most outrageous of the Bond movies.

Death of a Citizen with its double meaning title is my favorite Matt Helm book. The ending is a little bleak but not unexpected as Helm tries but fails to suppress who and what he really is.

It is interesting that agent Matt Helm was, as a civilian, a photographer and author of westerns. Donald Hamilton also wrote fine western stories and novels. Two of his better novels became classic movies, ‘The Big Country’ and ‘The Violent Men’ (Smoky Valley), both available for streaming from Amazon. The Big Country is currently free through Amazon Prime. Both movies are realistic westerns featuring notable Hollywood actors and stars.

Noir spy thriller, Book 1, finds the main character, Matt Helm, out on a date with his wife. Their three children are at home with a babysitter, two young boys and a baby girl. In WWII Matt was part of what is now called “black ops”, but at the time was so secretive, it didn’t exist(!?) “What we were, never was. What we did, never happened”. Fifteen or so years later, at a cocktail party, Matt is a fiction author, but is cleverly drawn back into his old life.

What’s fascinating about “Death of a Citizen”, and I imagine the rest of the series, is the culture of the times, 1950’s and 1960’s jumps out at the reader in a shocking way. A man who can suddenly justify infidelity, who casually thinks of his wife’s inhibitions, who loves seeing women in dresses, but despairs over the use of a girdle, changing her two buttocks into one! Ha! The Author doesn’t think to have the husband and wife deal with “her inhibitions”, and his whole expression of love/sex between them has to do with “hard kisses”.

Once the action starts, it’s almost non-stop, with wonderful surprises and twists hard-to-see-coming! I didn’t miss all the technology that modern spies have at their fingertips. It was fun to read about Helm having to stop at phone booths, and deal with big clunky cars. The author deals with the human condition, critical thinking, with little emotion to cunningly advance the storyline. The reader is left with questions at the end of this book that just make one want to read Book 2 and so on. I do not mean to suggest it is in any way a cliffhanger, though. It is easy to see why the Matt Helm Series was such a huge success! This is a fun, entertaining, crackerjack of a read!
