Nothing in common with the campy Dean Martin movies except the name and the cover professiom as a photographer. The sexism will probably bother some readers (can’t be interested in a woman who wears pants, honestly?), but the past, as they say, is a different country. And the female characters are actually more complex than the men, who are mostly there as obstacles to Matt’s mission so don’t rate more than a sentence or two. It’s also interesting how much time is devoted to, and how much character’s reactions are driven by the morality of what Helm does (he’s an assassin, not a spy) compared to somebody like James Bond where his killing is taken in stride by all concerned.

The Wrecking Crew audiobook in series Matt Helm

Matt Helm is an American government assassin. He is sent to eliminate people who have become a problem for the government and who cannot be easily dealt with in less drastic measures. We suspect Russia has such people, but we have never been quite sure that we have such people in the employ of the government. He is part of a secret agency, the wrecking crew, called in to eliminate problems with a single bullet or a blade. Such a man would shock ordinary citizens, and in this novel, we learn that the knowledge destroyed his marriage and ruined his chances with a lover caught up in the plot.
In many ways, Matt is politically incorrect, using words like “squaw,” expects women to be wearing dresses, and for men to act like men. There’s also an annoying predictability to some of the writing. Once a woman is bedded, she instantly refers to him as “darling,” for example. The sex scenes seem a little awkward and contrived; many would not be able to relate realistically to them. But there is a cold-blooded ruthlessness to Matt Helm that seems credible for an agent like that. He won’t give a target a fair chance anymore than sniper Kyle gave targets a chance in the Middle East.
The story unwinds, projecting its plot ahead of it with little tale-tale hints that aren’t too hard to pick up. Still, the books are page-turners and provide serious diversion from more pressing matters like mowing the lawn and washing the windows.

Audio The Wrecking Crew narrated by Stefan Rudnicki

Matt Helm remains an interesting character decades after he appeared in print. The easiest comparison is to James Bond. Both are basically assassins in service to their government with a license to kill but Helm is not a “cardboard booby” (Fleming’s description of Bond); he is a man of both violence and honor, ruthlessness and conscience. Many scenes in a Helm novel are disturbing but there is also an element of introspection normally absent in Bond. In The Wrecking Crew Helm chases down an enemy agent in northern Sweden. The title refers to the secret operation Helm works for, an agency facing political pressures that shape the plot of this story. The plot includes some very clever use of what literary spies call “trade craft” as Helm chases his quarry not only through the northern wilderness but also through a maze of competing agencies and personal betrayals. The result is an adventure that feels surprisingly contemporary and a story that draws us into the heart and mind of a fascinating character.
