Damien Boyd has written a very good, no-nonsense novel about some very gruesome murders in the UK. Mr. Boyd starts quickly having a head found in a sand trap at a local golf course. It seems a fresh crime, but we find the timeline for similar crimes spans a few decades, which furthers stymies DI Nick Dixon and his colleagues.
Eventually it becomes clear the crimes are tied to a death in the mid 70’s.

The book is a combination of a very good serial murder mystery and police procedural. Mr. Boyd’s writing is straightforward and he wastes no words on unnecessary fluff and repetitive writing. This is my second read by him and not my last.

I’d like to see a bit more development in the main characters. Additionally, I thought something a little off in the ending. Then again, maybe silence is golden. No, I don’t want to throw in a spoiler, so I’ll leave off at that.

Head in the Sand audiobook in series DI Nick Dixon Crime

But, as this is only his 2nd book, which I didn’t know when I read them, I am going to go by the reviews in his more current books. Still well written, good plot, and right amount of twists and turns. But no character development, no emotions at all by characters other than some tears. The writing is good enough to keep the interest going, but I don’t feel the attachment for lack of a better word, that I usually do when reading a series. Ending was great, but done so quick with no build up. So onward to the next one, and we’ll see!

Audiobook Head in the Sand by Damien Boyd

boyd has written a good detective story about some gruesome murders in england which take place over a couple of decades; you do not find out the real culprit(s) til the very end & it is a surprising ending; book moved well & i enjoyed it; only flaw was that i thought the character development was shallow & could have been better; otherwise i may have rated it a five star vs four star; good read

I’ve just discovered Damien Boyd’s DI Nick Dixon British detective novels and all are excellent. I’ve read all three of them and this one is the middle one, as I recall. As soon as I finished the first one, I downloaded the other two. I am eagerly waiting for the 4th.

These novels move along faster than many of the British crime novels I have read and I like a faster paced story. The story lines are good; all different types of murders/crimes. DI Dixon has transferred from the Yard to his small home town because he doesn’t want to be promoted out of a detecting position. Detective Inspectors lead the crime solving team, while Detective Chief Inspectors are in upper management and only get involved in a small advisory capacity. DI Dixon has a little romance, he gets wounded a couple of times, but he solves the cases, which is his thing. There is nothing like having the right man or woman in the right job.

Audio Head in the Sand narrated by Napoleon Ryan

This book is great! I finished ‘As the Crow Flies’ (the first book in this series) last night and promptly bought ‘Head in the Sand’ and I’m very happy I did. Damien Boyd is growing as an author, this book is well plotted with amazing twists and turns and it was very well paced. I downloaded ‘As the Crow Flies’ for free and it did its job, I bought this book and I just bought the third installment, ‘Kickback,’ after finishing this one. This is not the first time the ‘free’ first volume of a series has hooked me and I love being able to sample an entire book and learn the author’s ways. Thank you!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was a fast read, well written and very well plotted… had me guessing right up to the end! And, although I’ve never let my blood sugar get as low as Dixon did, the description of what it feels like is right on and I’ll be much more careful in the future.

Another interesting multiple murder mystery spaced 30 years apart with the difficult task of finding how they relate. Mix into the search aging issues and scattered locations, health issue of Diabetes of main detective, a romance that really isn’t as secret as Nick & Jane think, a surprise ending. Short but gripping read and love fun references such as the panda cars! It’s a trip.

I have greatly enjoyed reading this book and seeing the development of the characters from the previous one  As The Crow Flies (The DI Nick Dixon Crime Series) . In my review of that book I mentioned that I would like to see the partnership of trust between Nick Dixon and Jane Winter growing, but I didn’t expect it to grow in quite the way it did, nor as fast as it did. Suddenly they know each other very well, and Jane is privy to a secret about Nick which we didn’t know about in the previous book. I am glad to see a police detective with a real “thorn in the flesh”, his condition makes him much more realistic and it was well dealt with from the first mention, even down to the full blown hypo. We are beginning to get to know Nick much more and hopefully in the next book we will see more of Jane’s character emerging.

During the investigation we see Nick and his team chasing down every clue and gradually coming up with a connection between the cases but bewildered about the motive. As they tie things together they are able to work out the reasons behind these events and from that they can deduce who it is they are looking for – but he has disappeared without trace. Each time they think they have a credible suspect, something happens to prove them wrong. Will they ever get it right or will it come down to pure chance?

I liked Nick and his team, they are purposeful and focused but manage to retain their humanity, showing respect for both the living and the dead, and a dogged determination to get the perpetrator of these horrific crimes.
