Crosshairs audiobook free

Reading this novel on 1/6/21was nothing short of brilliant timing. This story in a nutshell is how the white majority in the US and in Canada, in particular, band together to push all “others” into hiding or workhouses reminiscent of the WWII Nazi camps. The story follows one group in hiding and their story. It is heart wrenching, eye opening, and should make us aware after 1/6/21 of all that we have to lose.

I wanted to dive into this novel and be inspired… but left disappointed. We don’t live in a world where “All [fill in the blank] are bad, and all [fill in the blank] are innocent/good/etc.” – but this novel is trying to sell that story, along with blatantly judging people who have suffered for not having suffered enough or as much as others and outright discounting their experiences, and ignoring the *fact* that some populations among the “Others” are, even today, guilty of intolerance and crimes against LGBTQ2S+… but only one group is ‘evil’… While Hernandez is clearly a passionate and skilled writer, I found the story juvenile and trite.

Audiobook Crosshairs by Catherine Hernandez

Wow.
A novel that we NEED right now, and always.
The imagining of a not-too-distant-possible-future as a tale of both caution, and more importantly CONSIDERATION.
Catherine Hernandez is an amazing writer. As a Canadian, I loved knowing exactly the places she described with wonderful accuracy – which made imagining myself inside the story all the more visceral.
I want to think of myself as an ally – and also do not think it is my place to give myself that title.
“What would I do” – is an essential question, ever-present in the reading of this book. I cannot wait to re-read her first novel, Scarborough…and look forward to whatever Catherine’s next offering might be!

Wow, this book is a wild ride! I spent half of this dystopian novel thinking how unimaginable it is and the other half thinking that it feels way too real. Set in the near-future, climate change and flooding wreak enough havoc to give authoritarian leaders the opportunity to swoop in and detain BIPOC, disabled, and queer folks in labor camps. Crosshairs tells the story of Kay, a Black drag queen, across two timelines: before the new regime comes into power and as he becomes central to the revolution.

I really enjoyed Kay’s story pre-regime and loved to read about his journey and life in the world of drag. I loved how the author explored the intersection of race and queerness in a way that fit so well in the story. Also, I really appreciated the exploration of identity. Honestly this book should be a must-read for white, cis, able-bodied folks. It definitely caused discomfort but in a good way – forcing me to examine my privilege and come to terms with my actions or lack thereof.
