Wow…I really felt my age while reading this book. Bea, our main character, is the type of person I can’t stand. She tries SOOOOOO hard to come off as this bad-ass righteous freedom-fighter, but there’s no fire behind it. She’s just an average middle-class teenage girl with no direction or life (other than smothering her younger sister, who DOES have dreams), so she’s made up this tough-girl persona that’s incredibly irritating. I knew I was officially old when I felt sympathy towards her principal during their eye-rolling exchange. Girl, you’re seventeen, you’re a nobody…get over yourself.

As for the story, I loved the idea and the setting. The airport being this kind of purgatory…a layover on your way to actual heaven. I loved the Memstractor (though not the name) and the idea of helping people who were struggling with unfinished business to move on. I loved that all the food was molded into Jell-O.

The execution? Not so much. As I mentioned, Bea sucks, but some other characters were really great and could have been fleshed out a lot more. There were also a lot of unanswered questions….will there be a second book about Bea and how she gets into heaven or was that it? If that was it, I would have loved to have known…

How was Todd given the job of manager?
Why as Jenna sent to the airport?
What was holding her back?
Does Glady’s ever get to leave?
Sadie…this book definitely needed more Sadie.
What’s the deal with the Disciplinary Council?
What awaits them all in heaven?

I also felt the whole storyline with her sister was a bit dramatic. It wasn’t Bea’s fault that Emmy found herself in the predicament she did. I did agree with a lot of what Emmy said to Bea about her attitude, but Emmy had no one to blame but herself, and frankly, her behavior didn’t really allow ANY room for her to be judgemental, but ok, sure. Everything was Bea’s fault.

And lastly, what I really couldn’t stand was the author continuously projecting her left-wing liberal views into the story-line.

WE. GET. IT

You hate Trump, women should have the right to choose, men are terrible misogynistic as*holes, and lawyers and corporations are bad because HOW DARE they want to make a ton of money!

Save it. It had no place in this story and was completely out-of-place. I couldn’t care less about people’s political views, to each their own, but it was obvious here and didn’t belong.

Overall, while I loved the idea, the finished product was just mediocre. While I wouldn’t discourage anyone from reading this, I also wouldn’t recommend it. It reads like it was rushed and ends like it’s unfinished. It was a disappointment.

You know that feeling when you hear about a book and the premise sounds so amazing that you can’t wait to dive in? Do you also know what it feels like to try to cling on to the anticipation as a few chapters fall flat? I’m wrapped in both of those after finishing this. I absolutely love the idea of an airport purgatory and that part of the story is fantastic. I love the witticism and zingy one-liners. The thing that kinda deflated me was the protagonist, Beatrice. She is THE WORST. I couldn’t find a shred of empathy for her, and it’s hard for me to connect to a book when I can’t stand the main character. But I know a lot of people do enjoy unlikeable characters, so maybe your experience will be completely different from mine.

Audiobook Layoverland by Gabby Noone

I didn’t read this book but my girlfriend did and she said since I bought it for her that I should give it 5 stars. I don’t know what this book is about and I’ll probably never read it so take this review with a healthy spoonful of skepticism……but let’s face it, you won’t. Either you won’t read this review or you won’t take this review with any skepticism. Because who does that? Who reads reviews or even looks into what’s past the surface of anything anymore. I wish those weird boxes of chocolates were still around. The ones that had all different flavors and even had the ones with toothpaste in them (thats what it tasted like at least). That box of chocolates taught almost an entire generation to see the sweet outer coating but remain skeptical of what’s under neath. Or it gave them diabetes.

Audio Layoverland narrated by Sophie Amoss

Okay, yes. I agree with what other reviewers have said about the unlikability (how the hell do you spell that word?) of the narrator. Bea’s tough to take. And in stark contrast with earnest Caleb, it borders on maddening. But that’s kind of what we want from our fiction, right? Space to feel? Intensely? And, with this book, I did. I started to read it hours after it was delivered and then went for a run with my daughter. While smacking the pavement, I felt the delicious anticipation of returning to the story. And when we got back, I showered, tucked into bed and kept the lamp over the nightstand on until I was aaall done.

I loved the ending. Beautifully-consistent with the structure of the entire text. You read the story with hope but also with understanding, an acceptance of what deep down you know *has* to be. And it’s executed pretty well, I think. I woke up the next morning super sorry I had already received it and read it, because I wanted to experience it for the first time all over again. Won’t go into the details of afterlife narratives and their tropes and issues, all I want to say is that this was a good story well told and I’m left craving more like it. If you’re on the fence and you’ve read this far, go for it. It’ll be like the midnight snack you don’t regret.

This was a fun and easy read with an amazing sense of humor. It was clear that the author treated all the characters with respect and weaved a story with heart and care. If you appreciate pop culture references and seek to meditate on morality, then this book is for you!
