I lived in Germany more than forty years ago and at that time spoke passable German. I recently moved back and wanted to refresh my language skills, so I tried a couple of Andre Klein\’s books. They really are a big help. The stories are not gripping mysteries but more along the lines of something like \”Dragnet\” (am I the only one that remembers that series?). However they are entertaining and incorporate a lot of useful expressions and vocabulary. At the end of each chapter there is a list of words and phrases with English translations, so it\’s easy and convenient to review. I recommend these stories as a great learning tool for intermediate to advanced German speakers and plan to purchase more stories in the series.

He has a sly sense of humor and doesn\’t beat you over the head with it. His police characters have personalities and a bit of quirkiness to them. The plot is straightforward and won\’t leave you in the dark. I\’m a middle forties guy who wanted to get back into learning German after a long layoff, say 20 years. Andre Klein has been a great find for me. The first time you read it will be a bit tough, but a second reading after a layoff will see you understanding it far better. if you couple your reading with audio lessons, as I do, I think you\’ll find it a good combination. After a time the grammar and syntax will begin to come together for you; your real opponent will be vocabulary and colloquial expressions.

I am learning a lot, I believe this book it helping increase my German vocabulary. I read the chapter, make out flashcards for the words I don\’t know, and then after memorizing the cards, reread the chapter. I have found that I actually enjoy reading the chapter more the second time. When I am done with the book, I go over all the flashcards that I have made and then reread the whole book as fast as I can. I enjoy these books. I love taking the short quizzes at the end of all the chapters.

I purchased this book to practice my German and it is great! It has a vocabulary and questions section after every chapter, that being said, this isn\’t your typical beginner\’s book – in fact I would consider this text more of an intermediate level because of the vocabulary. I highly recommend for someone taking German 3 and up!
